CHAMPAIGN — The Central Maroons pulled out yet another close victory at home, 51-50 against the MacArthur Generals on Friday night.
“I think we’re a work in progress,” first-year Maroons coach Wayne McClain said. “One game we’re good, the next game we haven’t looked so good, so we might do this all year.”
With 53 seconds left, MacArthur’s Kamari Jones connected on a wide-open three to tie the game at 50.
After both teams traded turnovers, Central’s Isiah Smith was fouled with 4.9 seconds to go. He made 1 of 2 free throws, leaving the door open for a last-second chance for the Generals. They never got a shot off.
“I thought our kids hung in there,” McClain said. “At the end when we needed a stop our kids came up with a big stop.”
Sean Suggs led the Maroons with 12 points and five rebounds.
Central also got a huge contribution off the bench from Norrlyn-Michael Allen.
“He was great for us (Friday night),” McClain said. “He actually saved us.”
Allen finished with 11 points and four rebounds.
Saint Louis recruit Marcus Bartley led the Generals with 11 points.
