Urbana reserves key Big 12 victory

URBANA — Moaso Bumba and Korrion Taylor didn’t overwhelm Decatur MacArthur with their scoring.

But Urbana doesn’t pull out a 61-58 win Friday night at Oscar Adams Gymnasium without those two.

Bumba supplied lockdown defense against Saint Louis University-bound guard Marcus Bartley (12 points). And Taylor distributed six assists in his first game of the season.

“We had great energy from guys off the bench,” Urbana coach Vashoune Russell said. “We played some defense we’ve been trying to play all year as far as being able to get after people.”

The Tigers used an 11-0 run late in the third quarter to hold off the Generals. Marcus Catchings (21 points, nine rebounds) and Conner Gremer (19 points, seven rebounds) provided all the scoring Urbana needed.

Centennial 62, Normal West 54. The Chargers are proving they have more than just Illinois recruit Michael Finke. Like Terrion Howard.

Centennial received 19 points from Finke and 17 from Howard in a road win.

“Offensively I thought we executed very well,” Centennial coach Tim Lavin said. “Defensively at times the dribble penetration hurt us a little bit, but Terrion played a real good floor game.”

Bloomington 64, Danville 56. Danville trailed 27-20 at halftime, but Bloomington entered the fourth quarter with a convincing 48-35 lead.

Denzel Smith led all scorers with 19 points and Jarhed Watson contributed 16 points for the Vikings.

Eisenhower 64, Central 59. The Maroons led 46-43 to start the fourth quarter before falling on the road. Kameron Rowan had 19 points for Central, which also received 16 points from Sean Suggs and 10 points from Jamal Stovall.

“We’ve just got to execute better,” Central coach Wayne McClain said. “It seemed like we did everything to give it away. We’ve just got to be smarter.”
