Plunk, Blue Ridge on top
BLOOMINGTON — Guard Michael Plunk became Blue Ridge’s all-time leading scorer Saturday night, but the senior had to watch from the sidelines in overtime as the seventh-seeded Knights downed top-seeded Ridgeview 57-56 in the McLean/Heart of Illinois tournament title game.
Plunk, who had 16 points, fouled out on the first possession of OT on a loose-ball rebound after a Knights miss.
Quickly, the Mustangs jumped ahead as Ridgeview’s Trey McCormick scored the first five points of overtime.
The Knights responded with a baseline score by senior Will Duggins to pull within 54-51 with about two minutes remaining.
Ridgeview’s Christian Fannin was fouled on the ensuing possession but missed both free throws, giving the Knights the ball on the rebound.
Duggins again scored on a put-back with about 1:30 remaining, pulling the Knights within one before two free throws by Ridgeview made it 56-53.
With less than 30 seconds left, sophomore Lindi Balazi went to the line, making his first free throw, missing the second and grabbing his own rebound.
Balazi kicked the ball back out and it went around the horn, finding him for a corner three-pointer that gave the Knights their first lead of OT.
■ Flanagan-Cornell 66, GCMS 57. Drake Royal’s 14 points led the Falcons, who lost in the consolation championship at Colfax after being outscored 45-36 in the second half.
