Toombs, Finke pace Chargers

URBANA — Khalil Toombs and Michael Finke made sure Centennial’s quest for a Big 12 title wasn’t derailed Tuesday night by a crosstown rival.

The duo missed three shots from the field, combining for 37 points in a 77-52 victory against Urbana.

Next up for the Chargers is a date Friday at second-place Bloomington.

“They do everything well,” Chargers coach Tim Lavin said. “They get after it defensively. They’ve got some good shooters, and it’ll be on their home floor.”

Toombs (8 of 10) led the way with 19 points, and Finke (9 of 10) added 18 points and 10 rebounds.

“We tried to pound the ball inside,” the 6-foot-3 Toombs said. “We didn’t really want to take too many outside shots because we knew we had the size advantage down low.”

Dedric Byrd sparked Centennial’s offense with seven assists.

Conner Gremer (12) and Malik Harris (10) cracked double figures for the Tigers.

Central 55, MacArthur 43. Wesley Dee and Kam Rowan had 12 points apiece to pace the visiting Maroons. Sean Suggs added seven points and eight rebounds as Central bolted to a 16-5 first-quarter lead. Lucas Beesley had three points, nine rebounds, five steals and three blocks.
