STM super-sectional preview
Class 1A super-sectional
St. Thomas More (22-7)
vs. Heyworth (23-7)
Tuesday, 7 p.m. at Illinois State University
The firsts will continue. A high school that had never won a sectional crown in boys’ basketball until last week will collect a super-sectional title and a state trophy. Will it be St. Thomas More? Or, will it be Heyworth? There’s little to differentiate the schools in games against common opponents. Both schools defeated El Paso/Gridley and lost to Decatur St. Teresa. STM was 2-0 against Fisher and Heyworth beat Fisher the only time they played. STM defeated Blue Ridge while Heyworth was 2-1 against Blue Ridge. “There are a lot of similarities,” Heyworth coach Tom Eller said. “At the middle of the season, we had a few injuries, but we’re finally over all that stuff.” Another trait they share is a team-first attitude. “Right now, it’s team over the individual,” Eller said. “It’s a matter of playing together and not caring who gets the credit. On paper, you won’t see anyone who jumps out stat-wise, but you’ll see a lot who can contribute.” The same goes for STM. Eight Sabers have scored in double figures this season. Freshman Doug Wallen (17.0) is the top scorer, followed by senior Mike Plecki (12.9) and freshman Clavin Davis (12.8). STM’s top scorer in the sectional semifinals, Kyler Jones, has played 15 games after returning from a soccer injury.
