Boys' basketball: 2017 preseason Top 10

They're having a ball in Danville ...

... and elsewhere as the season tips off today. Prep sports coordinator Colin Likas offers his inaugural rankings for the 2017-18 season:

1. Danville (22-9 LAST SEASON)

Ted Houpt's team returns not only Drake signee Kendle Moore, but highly touted freshman Tevin Smith joins the group before today's opener against Limestone in Lincoln.

2. Monticello (23-8)

Calvin Fisher, Luke Stokowski and Noah Wright all return from last year's Class 2A fourth-place team.

3. Mahomet-Seymour (22-9)

Cory Noe and Noah Benedict are back for the Bulldogs beginning today against Cahokia in Lincoln.

4. Champaign Central (19-10)

Doug Wallen and Bailey Dee are gone, but Grand Canyon signee Tim Finke is still here. The Maroons open Tuesday against Springfield Southeast in Decatur.

5. Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (23-9)

Bryce Barnes, Ryland Holt and Mitch McNutt, once they're done trying to win a football state title, will key the Falcons this winter on the hardwood.

6. Watseka (22-9)

Brendan Fletcher, Blake Castonguay and Ben Lyznicki are the main returning cogs for the Warriors.

7. Fisher (21-10)

Jaden Jones-Watkins, Kade Thomas & Co. open the season Tuesday against Prairie Central in Gibson City.

8. Unity (11-13)

The Rockets return much of their core, including six seniors led by last year's top scorer JT Wheeler.

9. BHRA (22-10)

Wyatt Edwards and Drew Reifsteck will have more prominent roles for Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin.

10. St. Joseph-Ogden (18-10)

All-time leading scorer Brandon Trimble is gone, but Lincoln Land signee Jordan Backs should spark SJ-O.
