Monday's highlights: Sabers stun Cornjerkers

Class 2A Hoopeston Area Regional

Paxton-Buckley-Loda 43, Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 38. The sixth-seeded Panthers held off the eighth-seeded Blue Devils to procure a regional quarterfinal triumph. Austin Gooden delivered a team-high 17 points for PBL (14-12), which faces No. 2 Monticello (22-1) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a regional semifinal game. Wyatt Edwards dropped in a game-high 18 points for BHRA (18-11).

St. Thomas More 46, Hoopeston Area 43. The 10th-seeded Sabers upset the fifth-seeded Cornjerkers on their home floor in a regional quarterfinal win. Riley Morris scored 11 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter to carry the Sabers (11-16). Nick Fruehling complemented Morris' efforts with 11 points as STM advanced to face No. 3 Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (24-3) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a regional semifinal game. Ryan Drayer led Hoopeston Area (22-9) with 15 points, while Logan Walder and Lucas Hofer each added 13.

Class 2A Tuscola Regional

Warrensburg-Latham 47, Tuscola 41. The ninth-seeded and host Warriors fell in a regional quarterfinal defeat. Brayden VonLanken led Tuscola (7-19) with 13 points and Jacob Kibler chipped in 10 points.

Meridian 69, Argenta-Oreana 57. The 11th-seeded Bombers lost in regional quarterfinal action. Drew Johnson scored a team-high 13 points for A-O (5-23).

Class 2A Salt Fork Regional

Villa Grove/Heritage 46, Westville 43. The 10th-seeded Hawks relied on stifling fourth-quarter defense to earn the regional quarterfinal win, rallying from a 41-35 deficit to start the fourth quarter. Stuart Wolf scored a team-high 15 points for Villa Grove/Heritage, while teammate Jared Stevens contributed 13 points for the Hawks (13-17), who face top seed St. Joseph-Ogden at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in a regional semifinal game. Tylan Stricklett paced Westville (8-21) with 19 points.

Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond 56, Georgetown-Ridge Farm 42. Will Cohan scored a game-high 16 points, Colton Romine finished with 13 points and 20 rebounds and Adam Day contributed 12 points for the seventh-seeded Knights (17-10) in a regional quarterfinal win. ALAH faces No. 4 Salt Fork at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in a regional semifinal game. Troy Baird led G-RF (5-25) with 14 points.

Class 2A Watseka Regional

Peotone 67, Iroquois West 42. The 11th-seeded Raiders faltered in a regional quarterfinal defeat. Austin Saathoff scored a team-high 11 points for IW (5-22).

Class 1A Milford Regional

Fisher 57, Uni High 49. Ryan Meents had 18 points, while Jaden Jones-Watkins (11 points) and Kade Thomas (10 points) also hit double figures for the eighth-seeded Bunnies (15-14) in a regional quarterfinal win. Fisher, which trailed 15-4 at the end of the first quarter against the Illineks, will face No. 1 Cissna Park at 6 p.m. Wednesday in a regional semifinal game. Camden Coleman (18 points) and Noah Blue (14 points) led the No. 7 Illineks (16-10).

Class 1A Decatur Lutheran Regional

Cerro Gordo/Bement 59, Blue Ridge 54. The 11th-seeded Broncos prevailed thanks to 16 points from Matt Guffey and 14 points from Will Wittmer. CG/B (8-19) plays No. 2 Decatur Lutheran at 6 p.m. Wednesday in a regional semifinal game. Nick Burrow scored a team-high 15 points for No. 10 Blue Ridge (4-23).

Nontournament

Danville 74, Rantoul 50. Caleb Griffin (12 points), Kendle Moore (11 points), Tevin Smith (10 points) and Elijah Davis (10 points) allowed Danville (23-2) to coast to a road nonconference win. Jametriel Hudson (14 points) and Hayden Cargo (13 points) carried Rantoul (7-21).

STM beating the Cornjerkers was no upset.  Over half of Hoopeston wins were against 1A schools.  Classic case of a team playing a soft schedule whose record looks good on paper while STM has a losing record but played a much tougher schedule.
