Preps roundup: Area swimmers end season

EVANSTON — Champaign Central sophomore Ryan Wierschem had the best finish among the area boys' swimming contingent, placing 18th in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.91 seconds on Friday at the state meet, but did not qualify for Saturday's finals.

Wierschem also tied for 22nd in the 50 freestyle (21.72). Centennial's Alex Shilts (30th in 100 butterfly, 45th in 50 freestyle), Danville's Lane Wagner (34th in 500 freestyle) and Urbana's Ethan Chow (45th in 100 breaststroke) also competed on Friday.

Centennial diver Damien McMullen placed 36th with a score of 174.90, and none of the Central or Centennial relays moved on either.

Maroons win finale. The Champaign Central boys' basketball team closed the regular season with a 79-69 home win against Proviso East. Khailieo Terry (22 points) and Tim Finke (21 points) led the way for Central (18-8).

Bulldogs prevail. The Mahomet-Seymour boys' basketball team beat Mattoon 67-56 at home. Cory Noe scored a team-high 21 points for the Bulldogs (19-10), while Grant Coleman (16 points) and Noah Benedict (12 points) also chipped in.

Warriors roll. Paced by 19 points from Blake Castonguay and 17 points from Drew Hagen, the Watseka boys' basketball team beat Beecher 63-41 in a Class 2A regional semifinal game in Onarga. The Warriors (20-10) play Momence at 7 tonight in the regional title game.

Clinton wins. Led by 13 points from Chase Reynolds and Dalton Smith, the Clinton boys' basketball team beat Prairie Central 58-49 at home. Jake Bachtold's nine points led PC.
