Maroons get it together, cruise to win

PARIS — The start could have, well, started better for the Champaign Central boys' basketball team.

But the top-seeded Maroons overcame a sluggish first quarter to post a convincing 70-40 win against Olney on Tuesday night in a Class 3A Paris Regional semifinal game.

"Every win is appreciated at this stage," Finke said. "When everybod gets to play and contribute, it's a good feeling."

The Maroons (19-8) only led the eighth-seeded Tigers 21-16 at the end of the first quarter before asserting themselves the rest of the way.

"We finally started to play defense and didn't let them dribble right to the basket," Finke said. "Olney did a nice job. We got several buckets early, and I think we got a little comfortable and went through the motions. But our bench brought some energy."

Tim Finke dropped in a game-high 21 points and Khailieo Terry contributed 14 points as 12 players scored for Central, including seven points from Luke McMahon and six points from A'Kieon Gill.

Up next for Central is either No. 4 Unity (15-8) or No. 6 Effingham (13-15) at 7 p.m. on Friday in the regional title game as the Maroons try to win their third straight regional.

"It's always a goal to win a regional," Jeff Finke said, "and our goal this year is to hopefully go beyond that."
