Black leaves Oakwood for gig with Redskins

SULLIVAN — Craig Black was happy serving as the Oakwood boys' basketball coach.

The four-year leader helmed the Comets to a Vermilion County Tournament title and the Vermilion Valley Conference crown last season, after all.

But there are times when an opportunity rolls around that's too good to pass up. And Black found that with the Sullivan boys' basketball program.

A cut day now exists in golf.

And a mercy rule is in place for basketball season.

Those are among the notable IHSA rule changes for the 2018-19 academic year that will affect the state wrestling and golf tournaments, as well as lopsided regular-season basketball games.

'It really was surreal'

Brian Brooks compiled a 324-121 record in 15 seasons coaching at St. Joseph-Ogden before stepping aside in March. The man who helped guide the Spartans to a 2016 Class 2A state title will serve as the South coach in today's Class 1A/2A Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game in Pontiac.

'Those were always fun'

Chad Benedict  won six regional titles in 19 seasons coaching at Chrisman (1999 to 2006) and Mahomet-Seymour (2006 to 2018). The man who helped lead M-S to the Class 3A Elite Eight in 2015 will serve as the South coach in today's Class 3A/4A Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game in Pontiac.
