Twenty-one basketball leaders with area ties have been deemed Coach of the Year by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

Eleven of these individuals come from the high school level, and one is a college-level coach. Ten local names are listed among IESA honorees, but one is a duplicate from the prep ranks.

Here are the area award recipients:

Friends, rivals put on a show

CHAMPAIGN — Fans and supporters attending Sunday's Parkland College/News-Gazette All-Area All-Star boys' basketball game may not have known exactly what to expect as they entered Dodds Athletic Center.

But it didn't take long for that picture to become clear, as players on both teams sank three-pointers from well beyond the arc in warmups.

Judah Christian's Chitty amped for All-Star game

CHAMPAIGN — Prior to the 2017-18 boys' basketball season, Cade Chitty was part of a Judah Christian program that had most recently compiled a 13-14 campaign.

He also was suiting up for a team that had never won postseason hardware. And he still was seeking a college at which to continue his hoops career.

Things sure can change in a hurry, though, especially in the sports world.
