Prep pulse: March 18, 2019

The spring sports season is officially under way.

Baseball, softball, girls' soccer and boys' tennis events were contested last week through iffy weather, joining the already-ongoing indoor track and field scene.

That means there are some things to discuss pertaining to the conclusion of winter prep athletics and the start of the spring campaign.

Cinderella story for Chargers not easily forgotten

Centennial boys' basketball entered the 2009 Class 3A state tournament the top-ranked team.

Thirty victories versus one defeat. Triumphs against Peoria Manual, Lincoln (twice), Hillcrest, Peoria Richwoods, Normal Community, Springfield Southeast (twice) and Belleville Althoff — all regional champions with 20 or more wins on the season.

Terry, Houpt, Smith earn AP all-state nods

Three area athletes from two Big 12 Conference schools are Associated Press all-state boys' basketball honorable mention choices.

The Class 3A and 4A votes, which were tabulated and released Thursday afternoon, included at least two media members from around the state picking each of Champaign Central's Khailieo Terry and Danville's Sean Houpt and Tevin Smith for all-state status.

Falcons stars appreciative of rooters

CHAMPAIGN — As members of the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley boys' basketball team recalled some of their favorite moments from a recently concluded season, a common denominator took form.

The Falcons, who secured a Class 2A third-place trophy last weekend in Peoria, just enjoyed competing in front of their raucous support system while posting the best campaign in program history.

Falcons rally late, cruise through OT to finish third at state

PEORIA — For Bryce Barnes and his Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley boys’ basketball teammates, the message was simple.

Coach Ryan Tompkins and his staff used halftime of Saturday’s Class 2A third-place game against Chicago Corliss to let the Falcons know just 16 minutes remained in their already-memorable season.
