Wednesday's prep highlights: Centennial wins golf title
Golf
– AUSTIN HUNT was medalist with a 71 to lead Centennial to the team title at the second Champaign County Championship at Urbana Country Club.
The Chargers shot 300 to edge defending champion Mahomet-Seymour by 6 strokes.
"It's good confidence for us to finally get over the hump," Centennial coach MIKE WALLNER said. "We've been there all year, and it's good to finally win something with Mahomet in there. They've handled us. Hopefully it's something we can build on."
PETER BLACK shot 75, RYAN HUNT 76 and NATE OVERMAN 78 for Centennial.
M-S continued a strong fall run. The Bulldogs have won two tournaments, finished second in two others and third once.
"We have to have four guys shoot well on the same day, and we didn't do that today," M-S coach NATHAN MILLS said. "Our guys are little disappointed."
St. Thomas More, which finished third at 315, got a second-place finish from Nathaniel Khachaturian (74).
Black tied for third with St. Joseph-Ogden's Mason Silver and M-S' Seth Trolia and Garrett Cox.
– Centennial's Lizzy Dombroski carded a 3-under-par 33 to win medalist honors at Scovill Golf Course in Decatur.
– Ridgeview's KRIS TRHLIK carded a 4-over-par 40 to claim medalist honors and lead the Mustangs to victory against LeRoy and Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley at Indian Springs in Saybrook.
Ridgeview's SAM HARDEN finished second at 43, and teammate Jared Atherton was third at 44.
The Panthers, who finished second in the triangular, were led by Caleb Graybeal's 45. The Falcons received 47s from David Hohulin and Adam Sommer.
Volleyball
– Champaign Central's Alex Pelmore had seven digs and seven kills, but host Jacksonville defeated the Maroons (0-1) 25-23, 25-19. Esther Kemper recorded six digs for Central, which got three aces and five kills from Alina Altmyer. Jaelyn Westfield and CourtnEY Richardson each had four kills, and Audrey Aeilts had 16 assists for the Maroons.
– Heather Baker had 15 kills, six blocks and four aces, leading Salt Fork to a 28-26, 17-25, 26-24 victory against Watseka at the Schlarman tournament. Megan McCord recorded six kills, two aces and 24 digs for the Storm, which received one kill, four aces and 25 assists from Maddy Stutsman. Emilie McFadden added four kills and two blocks.
In Salt Fork's 25-20, 25-19 loss against St. Thomas More, Baker had seven kills, two aces and three blocks. McCord registered 17 digs, four kills and three aces, and Stutsman had 13 assists and three aces. In another tournament match, the Sabers defeated Watseka 25-22, 25-14 behind Megan Casagrande's 10 kills and five blocks. Shannon Siuts added eight assists and three aces, and teammate Victoria Hennessey contributed 13 digs. The Warriors got five kills from Jessica Allhands, 16 assists from Kat Grimes and seven blocks from HaYley Gray.
– Jenny Srikant had 11 assists, leading host Urbana (5-0) to a 21-25, 25-20, 25-11 victory against Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin. The Tigers received seven kills from Christie Stark and three aces from Ericka Dix.
– Danville defeated host Westville 25-22, 26-24 in a nonconference match.
Soccer
– St. Thomas More defeated Watseka 3-2 in a Sangamon Valley Conference tournament match. The Sabers (5-0) can claim the tourney title with a victory today against Clifton Central in Gilman.
STM's John Tabb had one goal and one assist. Andrew Walsh and Daniel Shin also scored for the Sabers. Travis Johnson added an assist, and keeper Robert SchLorff made 14 saves.
The Sabers led 2-0 in the first half before Todd Lyznicki scored off an assist from Brede Parker.
Jed Hasselbring also added a second-half goal for the Warriors.
