Tuesday's prep highlights: Illineks, Chargers run to titles
Cross-country
– Urbana University High's ALBERT ANASTASIO (16 minutes, 19 seconds) finished 41 seconds before St. Thomas More's JACOB HELFRICH to win the boys' Twin City Meet at Illini Meadows in Urbana. The Illineks won the team title with top-10 finishes from ZIRAN SHANG (seventh), BUCK WALSH (eighth) and VINAY SHANBHAG (10th). SEAN KELLEY finished third and NICK HESS fourth for second-place St. Thomas More. Centennial's BLAS GARCIA-CANGA finished fifth.
– Urbana's MEGHAN HOUK (19:38) broke the Twin City Meet record (19:42) set by Centennial's AUDREY WHITE a year ago en route to winning the race at Illini Meadows. Centennial won the team title thanks to top-10 finishes by White (third), HANNAH CUTTELL (sixth) and TAYLOR COATS (eighth). St. Thomas More's THERESA WELLE (20:23) earned second. SARAH VAUGHEN finished fourth for second-place Urbana University High, and NICOLE CHOQUETTE finished fifth for third-place Urbana.
– St. Joseph-Ogden's CHELSEA BLAASE crossed the finish line eight seconds ahead of Oakwood's CIARA PIERCE in the Spartans' dual win at Kickapoo. SJ-O runners claimed the 3-9 spots, including third-place SIDNEY LONG, fourth-place JOLEE PADEN and fifth-place SUZANNE FORD.
– ZEKE ELKINS, LANDON VOWELS, DREW KNIPFER, CHAS COX and ARIC PELAFAS swept the top five spots for the St. Joseph-Ogden boys in a dual win against Oakwood at Kickapoo.
Golf
– Medalist ANDY BOTT carded a 42 for Bismarck-Henning in the Blue Devils' win against Watseka and Westville at Harrison Park. Teammates STEPHEN KROUT and AUSTIN TOLER each shot 43.
– C.G. FACER's 41 was the top score for third-place Urbana in a match against Bloomington and Mattoon at Urbana Country Club. Facer finished eighth.
– Judah Christian's NICK BERGER and STEPHEN LOWE shot 41s and shared medalist honors with Schlarman's JORDAN KING in the Tribe's 187-218 win against the Hilltoppers at Lake of the Woods.
– JOSIAH DAVIDSON, LUCAS MOSSMAN and ANDREW SPARROW each shot 45s to tie for second place for Sullivan, which tied Maroa-Forsyth at 182 in a dual at Sullivan Country Club.
– LeRoy's MOLLY MARCUM won medalist honors by firing a 46 for the Panthers in their 207-242 win against Normal Community. HALEY MITCHELL (51) and KATIE WOLTKAMP (52) helped LeRoy sweep the top three spots.
Tennis
– EMMA PECK, RACHAEL LEWIS, BETHANY SEXTON and COURTNEY HART won in singles and doubles for host Danville in a 9-0 win against Mattoon.
– JIWON YOON, STEPHANIE AGUAS and MONICA PRICHARD won singles and doubles matches for St. Thomas More in a win against Urbana. TESSA TURNER won in singles and doubles for the Tigers.
Soccer
– JUAN PORTILLO scored a goal and added three assists for Champaign Central in a 9-0 win against Mount Pulaski. ERICK MUKENDI scored twice for the Maroons (3-0).
– ROBERT SCHLORFF scored on a pass from JOHN TABB in visiting St. Thomas More's 1-0 win against Iroquois West.
– DREW SCHUMACHER and GARRETT MUMM each scored a goal for host Monticello in a 2-1 win against Mattoon. JOSH SCHUMACHER stopped eight shots for the Sages.
– Urbana's JONATHAN LUKUSA scored 12 seconds into the match and added a second-half goal, leading the Tigers to a 3-1 win against host Danville. ADAM BLACKMAN also scored for Urbana, which got nine saves from JULIAN THRELKELD. WESTON DEPRATT scored for the Vikings.
– J.J. MALONE scored four second-half goals for Blue Ridge in a 4-1 win against host Judah Christian. JONATHAN ELARDO scored for the Tribe.
– BREDE PARKER and DEVIN CURRY each scored a goal for Watseka in a 4-2 loss to visiting Kankakee Bishop McNamara.
– MATT CHAMBERLAIN and ADAM PELLEGRINI scored for Schlarman in a 2-0 win against Unity.
– PATRICK WONG scored four goals and CONRAD SCHLOER scored twice for Urbana Uni High in a 7-0 win against Fisher/GCMS. TARIK KORIC scored a goal and assisted on four others for the Illineks.
Volleyball
– TABITHA DAVIS contributed 11 service aces, five digs, four kills and a block for Sullivan in a 25-5, 25-5 win against host Lovington. CHELSEE McMAHAN added nine assists, five kills, four digs and an ace for Sullivan.
– Mahomet-Seymour's EMMA CABUTTI tallied seven kills and two service aces for the Bulldogs in a 25-17, 25-18 loss to Olympia. ABBIE MAGRINI added 10 digs and LOGAN MOORE 11 assists for M-S.
– SAM KOHLBECKER distributed 29 assists and had six digs to help Tuscola move to 5-0 in a 19-25, 25-18, 25-12 win against Arcola. LINDSEY TROIKE recorded 12 kills and OLIVIA MORRIS had 16 digs for the Warriors.
– SARAH OPRONDEK had six service aces and HAYLEY MALONE six digs for host Prairie Central in a 25-22, 25-12 loss to Normal U-High.
– JENNA HEIDEMAN had 11 assists and eight kills to lead CPCI to a 25-14, 25-17 win against visiting Iroquois West. TAYLOR REDEKER added nine digs and three service aces for the Timberwolves, who got 10 assists from MACY FOCKEN and eight kills from SAMANTHA STOLLER.
– Monticello's JULIE WALSH had nine kills, seven digs and three aces, leading the visiting Sages to a 25-18, 25-14 win against Bement. LIA TEMPLEMAN (nine digs), KIA COMBES (two kills, four digs) and KRISTYN BARRETT (four assists, two aces, two digs) also contributed to the victory. Bement got six blocks from SARAH O'BRIEN.
– LYNDEY BRADDOCK (six kills), DEVIN McFADDEN (six aces), JENNA ZOLLAR (seven assists) and CYERRA WILBURN (six blocks) led Hoopeston Area in a 25-17, 25-16 win against Donovan.
– JESSICA GREER had 11 kills, eight digs and two blocks to help Danville First Baptist to a 25-21, 25-19 win against Cornerstone Christian. CHARITY FESTER (11 digs), BETHANY WASSON (seven assists, seven digs, two aces) and MEGAN HOLYCROSS (seven assists) also contributed for First Baptist.
– EMMA HOYER had four kills and four service aces for Urbana Uni High in a 25-23, 25-21 loss to Normal Calvary. JAMIE BLUE had four aces for the Illineks.
– EMILY SCHOPP handed out 23 assists, HAILEY FRICHTER had 21 digs, STEPHANIE HOWELL served six aces and CHELSEA KLINE had 13 kills for LeRoy in a 16-25, 26-24, 25-18 loss to Lexington.
– PATRICE McCLAIN had 11 assists for Rantoul in a 25-20, 25-21 win against Eureka. TINA AGUIRRE (six kills), HANNAH WASCHER (six blocks) and MAGGIE DANIELS (11 digs) also chipped in for the Eagles.
Swimming
– HANNAH NEWMAN (200-yard medley relay, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) and EMMA NEWMAN (200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke) each won three events for Champaign Central in the Maroons' 119-66 win against Danville.
– Urbana freshman GABRIELA RAJIC was a winner in three events (200 freestyle relay, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) in the Tigers' 104-81 loss to Normal West. JENNIFER HILL (200 freestyle relay, 100 backstroke) was a two-time winner.
