Vega powers Maroons to comeback win

CHAMPAIGN – Champaign Central midfielder Ricky Vega scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Maroons to a 2-1 season-opening win against Quincy on Saturday.

The Maroons trailed 1-0 at the half before Matt Bragg set up Vega's score midway through the second half.

Vega then connected with Martin Musuruana, who scored the winner a few minutes later.

Maroons keeper Mark Pataky made four saves in the victory.

Centennial 5, Normal West 0

Kyle Bullock scored three goals and Jonathan Hinds added a goal and two assists as the host Chargers rolled in their Big 12 opener.

Michael Warren also scored for Centennial, which got a combined shutout from Daniel Wiggs and Michael Drackley. The Chargers haven't allowed a goal in two matches this season.

"It was good to get the season off to a strong start," Centennial coach Cole Bushue said.

Urbana 0, Chatham Glenwood 0

Spencer Bolen made six saves for the host Tigers in nonconference action.

"We controlled the tempo," Urbana coach Randy Blackman said. "We played well as a unit and played like we deserved better than a draw."

Grant Park 4, Iroquois West 2

Nick Leon and Jorge Estrella scored for the host Raiders in their season opener.

Uni takes tournament

Urbana University High went 2-0-1 to win its own tournament Saturday.

The Illineks defeated Oakwood (5-1) and Blue Ridge (1-0) and tied Fisher/Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 1-1. Uni's Holden Bucher scored the Illineks' goal in the tie, and Sean Adams found the back of the net for Fisher/GCMS.

Blue Ridge upended Fisher/GCMS 4-1 behind three goals from Kevin Price and one from Andy Stivers. Kate Schmitt scored for Fisher/GCMS in the loss.
