Blue Ridge loses heartbreaker

WARRENSBURG — Goalkeepers can alter the course of a match with an amazing save or good awareness in the box, but they don’t often get the chance to score.

Macomb’s Blake Lowderman got his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and made the most of it. The junior keeper sent a penalty kick past his Blue Ridge counterpart, Blayne Zeigler, to give the Bombers a 1-0 victory and a Class 1A sectional championship.

The two teams played to a 0-0 tie through 100 minutes.

Blue Ridge had plenty of opportunities to change the outcome, even in PKs.

Ian Riggs had a chance to put the Knights up 2-0 after senior Jon Jones calmly fired his shot past Lowderman, but his attempt sailed wide and Macomb answered.

“It’s the worst way you can lose,” Blue Ridge coach Marty Price said. “Both teams fought hard, and it comes down to PKs. Somebody’s got to go home a winner.”

The Knights nearly scored midway through the first half when senior Joshua McQuaid sent a shot curling toward the goal only to be denied by a diving Lowderman.
