MAHOMET — Urbana played its best soccer match of the season Wednesday night.

Guess what?

“I think we can play even better,” Tigers coach Randy Blackman said after a convincing 5-1 win against Normal University High in a Class 2A sectional semifinal. “There are times in practice when this team gives me the wow factor. I watch them play and just say ‘Wow.’
“Tonight was one of those times.”

The Tigers (18-2) can win their first sectional since 2005 by beating Springfield at 5 p.m. Friday at Mahomet-Seymour. That they lost to the Senators 2-0 in a regular-season match doesn’t bother Blackman.

“If we play like we did tonight, we’ll be fine,” he said. “We don’t always play that way. It was good to see the team I know show up.”

The Tigers are 3-0 in postseason play, outscoring opponents 11-2. The Pioneers never had a chance.

“We passed, we moved, we played good defense,” Blackman said. “Nothing went wrong. We did all the things you’re supposed to do.”

Jonathan Lukusa’s early goal set the tone. The 6-foot-1 senior outjumped U-High’s keeper to knock home a head-turning header.

“It looked like he jumped 10 feet in the air,” Blackman said. “It was a pretty incredible jump. But he does that all the time.”

Five different Tigers scored, including David Anderson,  Joey Lund, Brian Lopez and Miguel Fierro. Gesi Muharremi had two assists. And goalie Brian Summers, backed by a solid defense, was sharp with two saves.

“It’s just good to see all the kids playing well,” Blackman said.
