Teams of the Week: A-P volleyball in spotlight

The top-seeded Trojans won all three Vermilion County tournament matches in two-set sweeps, reaching the 20-win mark by defeating Salt Fork in the finals. Makenzie Vinson had nine kills, Rachel Miles eight and Macey Williams four against the Storm.

The Sages won the final 12-school Okaw Valley Conference meet. Runner-up Matt Norvell was timed in 15 minutes, 18 seconds. The next four runners — Justin Furcich, Jesse Galaway, Zach Mesplay and Will Montgomery — were within 34 seconds of one another entering the finish chute.

The Vikings won 13 of 16 matches between singles and doubles at sectional, sending four entries to state. Singles runner-up Taylor Ellis posted six 6-0 wins at the meet. Doubles runners-up Amy Shah and Neha Patel won 36 of 37 games before the finals against their teammates.

After no score in regulation or overtime, the Sages held a 5-3 edge in penalty kicks against Blue Ridge and captured the regional crown. Hitting their penalty kicks were Luke Hanselman, Matt Blaser, Michael Clark, Ryan Schaub and Joey Tombs. Schaub had seven saves.
