Tigers can't repeat magic of state run

URBANA — Urbana’s boys’ soccer team will have to wait at least one more season to return to the state tournament.

The Tigers lost 1-0 to Rochester on Saturday in a Class 2A sectional final.
“We just didn’t find the net,” Urbana coach Randy Blackman said.

The Tigers had several scoring opportunities. Six minutes into the match, Saul Downie had a penalty kick that missed the top of the goal by inches.

Urbana had several other chances but couldn’t get a shot off.

“They did a good job of closing us down,” Blackman said.

The Tigers’ defense was just as good.

The match was scoreless at intermission and remained that way until 3 minutes, 13 seconds were left in the second half, when Rochester’s Austin Bell snuck a shot over several Urbana defenders.

“He had a nice little shot on the overlap,” Blackman said. “We were on the same corner. Got a little flick and it just kind of went off. That happens.”

Urbana desperately tried to tie the match but was unable to get a good look in the waning moments.

A dejected Blackman still was encouraged by his team’s play.

“I thought we played as well as they did. It just didn’t go our way. We’ll learn from it and try to get better.”
