With several teams in action on Monday, sports editor MATT DANIELS offers up The News-Gazette's first poll of the 2017 season.


1. Urbana 19-4-1 Randy Blackman returns for his 32nd season in charge of the Tigers and the Class 2A regional champs last year open Aug. 29 at Rantoul

2. Danville 14-4-3 Reigning N-G Player of the Year Caleb Griffin is back to lead the Vikings, who begin season on Aug. 29 at home against Hoopeston Area

3. Uni High 18-3 Twins Omeed Miraftab-Salo and Rahi Miraftab-Salo should lead Illineks, who play at fellow small-school power Williamsville tonight in opener

4. Mahomet-Seymour 12-8-1 Bulldogs begin emotional season, playing for late teammate Jacob Hamilton, tonight when they host Metamora at 6:30 p.m.

5. Champaign Central 12-10-1 New coach Nick Clegg has same solid expectations for Maroons, who host St. Thomas More at 6 p.m. Wednesday in their season opener

6. Blue Ridge 14-7-3 Knights, who opened season on Monday with home loss against Bloomington Central Catholic, always seem to produce a prolific goal scorer

7. St. Thomas More 14-7-2 Sabers opened with 6-0 win against Judah Christian before Joe Hoffman and rest of Sabers travel to face Champaign Central on Wednesday

8. St. Joseph-Ogden 13-10 Spartans won 2-0 at Oakwood/Salt Fork in Monday's season opener. SJ-O will try to make it two in a row tonight at Hoopeston Area

9. Oakwood/Salt Fork 15-8-1 Class 1A regional champs from a year ago stumbled against St. Joseph-Ogden on Monday, look to get back on track today at Watseka

10. Centennial 6-15-1 Chargers — who last won a regional title in 2011 — struggled last season, but new campaign kicks off tonight against St. Anthony at home
