Saturday's prep highlights: STM wins golf title

In girls' golf

At Gibson City. ALEXIS FREUND shot 83 and KELSEY GALLIVAN fired an 84 to lead St. Thomas More to the title of the 12-team Doc Keller Invitational at Railside. Freund was sixth and Gallivan seventh. Teammate SIERRA MYERSCOUGH (85) was ninth. Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley's EMILY SPANGLER shot an 80 to finish third.

In girls' tennis

At Champaign. St. Thomas More's MADDIE BAILLON defeated Centennial's ALLISON HANSEN 6-2, 7-6 in the third-place match at No. 1 singles in the Centennial Invitational.

Danville tied for sixth in the 16-team event as RACHAEL LEWIS and REBECCA LEWIS placed third at No.1 doubles.

In girls' cross-country

At Normal. Centennial's AUDREY WHITE was sixth in 19 minutes, 53 seconds at the 56-runner Normal West Invitational. REBECCA KAEFRING was 12th as the Chargers took third in the team standings.

At Riverton (Ind.). First Baptist's RACHEL WELLS placed 10th in the Riverton Parke Invitational. She completed the 5-kilometer course in 24:25.

In boys' cross-country

At Normal. AARON MILLER (11th), JACKSON SHEDELBOWER (12th) and BLAS GARCIA-CANGA (13th) led Centennial to a fourth-place finish in the Normal West Invitational at Maxwell Park. Miller stopped the timer in 16:45.

In football

Prairie Central 35, Newton 0. EVAN BAHLER rushed for 134 yards on nine carries and MARCUS BACHTOLD ran for two touchdowns to lead the visiting Hawks. STEVIE WIDLACKI ran for 128 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown, and quarterback ADDISON BOUNDS passed for 88 yards and ran for a score.

In volleyball

At Eureka. Urbana went 3-1 and placed second at the Eureka tournament behind 24 kills from CHRISTIE STARK. MACEY SMART added 21 kills and ALAYNA JACKSON chipped in 19 blocks. JENNY SRIKANT added 50 assists and four aces.

At Farmer City. KAITLYN ZELHART (30 kills, 16 aces), JORDAN WHEELER (18 kills) and EMILY ZELHART (10 aces) were named to the all-tourney team as Blue Ridge took second in its tournament. Woodland defeated the Knights 25-22, 18-25, 25-21 in the title match. Heritage topped Urbana Uni 25-19, 25-18 for third place.

In soccer

At Bourbonnais. Danville won twice in the Bradley-Bourbonnais tournament, beating Kankakee Bishop McNamara 2-0 and Wilmington 9-0. MAC LEVERENZ and LANDON KENNEDY scored in the opener, while Kennedy, AUSTIN UMBARGER, JOSE TAPIA and ZACH DOWNING each scored twice in the second match. WESTON DePRATT had a goal and four assists.

At Mahomet. ELIJAH YATES had two goals and an assist as Hoopeston Area/Bismarck-Henning beat Mahomet-Seymour 4-0 to take third place in the Bulldogs' tournament. Keeper BEN BRUMETT earned the shutout.

At Urbana. Urbana University High swept its three matches to capture the four-team Uni Shootout. The decisive match proved to be a 3-1 victory against Blue Ridge, which went 2-1 in the tourney. PAUL SEELEY scored in the first minute and PATRICK WONG added a goal in the fourth minute as the Illineks jumped in front. Uni also defeated Fisher/GCMS 7-1 and Oakwood 5-0 as Alex Mestre scored three goals. Chris Nguyen allowed two goals in the three wins.

At Streator. NIGEL MARTINDILL had six goals as Schlarman went 2-1 in the Streator tournament. Martindill had four goals in a 7-3 victory against Paw Paw and had both of the Hilltoppers' scores in a 2-0 win against Coal City. Martindill, ANDRES MOLINA, BROCK DREWS and keeper CHRIS KUCHEFSKI earned all-tourney honors.

Edwardsville 2, Centennial 1. DIAMOND WILLIAMS scored on an assist from LONNIE BARNES in the second half, but visiting Edwardsville held on.
