Thursday's prep highlights: Centennial starts with sweep

In volleyball

St. Thomas More 2, Urbana 0. The Sabers outbattled visiting Urbana 25-18, 25-20 behind Lexi Wallen's nine kills and Katie Kulas' five service aces and five kills. Alayana Jackson had five kills and three blocks for the Tigers, who received seven kills from Kelsea Bishop.

Centennial 2, Lincoln 0. Kara Johnson's five service aces lifted visiting Centennial to a season-opening 25-12, 25-12 win. Maddie Weldon and Paulina Nottingham contributed eight assists each for the Chargers.

Arthur-Lovington 2, Tuscola 0. Karly Goodman belted seven kills for A-L in a 25-22, 25-15 road win. Hannah Scribner had five blocks for the Warriors.

Blue Ridge 2, Cornerstone Christian 0. Amber Blazek and Gabby Pearl had five kills apiece for Blue Ridge in a 25-4, 25-9 victory at Bloomington. Emily Zelhart contributed 14 assists to the win.

Marshall 2, Chrisman 0. Kelsey Potter had six kills and two service aces for the Cardinals in a 25-18, 25-20 home loss. Katelynn Kindred contributed seven digs for Chrisman.

Windsor 2, Sullivan 0. Emily Neuhauser had eight digs and two kills for Sullivan in a 25-15, 25-19 road loss.

PBL 2, Tri-Point 0. The Panthers swept to a 25-11, 25-7 victory at the Timberwolf Tip-Off in Cissna Park behind Kandace Hofer's 11 kills and Kayla Cowan's 22 assists.

PBL 2, Momence 0. In their second match of the night, the Panthers rode Cowan's 21 assists and Hofer's seven kills to a 25-16, 25-11 win.

Bement 2, Sangamon Valley 1. Sabrina Hinton's 12 blocks and nine digs powered the visiting Bulldogs to a 25-14, 16-25, 25-18 win.

In boys' soccer

Urbana 7, Eisenhower 0. The Tigers opened their season by rolling to a home victory behind Miguel Fierro's two goals. Eisenhower was limited to one shot on goal.

St. Thomas More 7, Heyworth 0. Dan Shin scored four goals, including all three of his team's second-half tallies, to lead the Sabers to a road win. Brad Fritchey contributed two goals and Wiley Jones had three assists for STM, which has outscored its first two opponents 11-0.

Urbana Uni High 2, St. Joseph-Ogden 2. George Voulgaris scored on an assist by Tarik Koric in the 56th minute to lift host Uni High to a tie. Peter Ivanov gave the Illineks their only lead of the match with a goal in the sixth minute. Austin Baker countered with a pair of goals to give the Spartans a 2-1 halftime lead. Aric Pelafas assisted on both of Baker's tallies.

Unity 1, Oakwood 0. Craig Kocher scored a first-half goal on an assist by Brishan McCowan, and the Rockets' defense made it stand up in a home win.

Blue Ridge 7, Iroquois West 0. A hat trick by Dylan Grammer, including two unassisted goals in the first half, propelled the Knights to a road win. Jon Jones and Riley Malone each had a goal and an assist.

In boys' golf

At Villa Grove. Medalist Jacob Katovick shot a 44 to lead Salt Fork to a 29-stroke win in a three-team meet at Tri-City Golf Course. Hayden Kile of runner-up Shiloh was the No. 2 finisher with a 46.

At Gibson City. Wyatt Brownlee of team champion GCMS carded a 43 for a 1-stroke win in a three-school meet at Railside Golf Club. The Falcons, who had three of the top four scorers, edged runner-up Heyworth 184-187.

At Saybrook. Kris Trhlik shot a 37 to lead Ridgeview to second place in a three-team meet at Indian Springs Golf Course. Mason PottS was the low scorer for third-place Blue Ridge with a 40.

At Moweaqua. Lucas Mossman of Sullivan shot a 39 to earn medalist honors in a four-team meet at Moweaqua Golf Course. The Redskins finished third. Noah Yantis (47) was the low scorer for fourth-place Arcola/Arthur-Lovington.

At Grant Park. Romer Gillespie led Watseka with a 49 in a 201-213 loss to Grant Park at Minne Monesse Golf Club.

At Mahomet. Medalist Nick Berger shot a 35, leading Judah Christian to a 196-210 victory against Decatur Lutheran at Lake of the Woods Golf Course.

In girls' golf

At Savoy. Anna Pryde-Wait and Katelynn Martinez finished second and third, respectively, boosting Centennial to a 5-stroke victory in a three-team meet at the University of Illinois Blue Course. Pryde-Wait shot a 46 — 5 shots behind medalist Sarah Bell of runner-up Bloomington Central Catholic. Martinez carded a 48. Caroline Dodds (49) was the low scorer for St. Thomas More.

At Gibson City. Led by medalist Amber Tabaka (47), Mahomet-Seymour had three of the top four scorers and rolled to a 202-256 win against GCMS at Railside Golf Club. Katie Spangler of the Falcons finished second with a 49.

At Fairbury. Medalist Jackie Duffy shot a 43 for a 2-stroke win, leading Prairie Central to a 191-213 victory against El Paso-Gridley at Indian Creek Country Club.

In cross-country

At Sullivan. Jeffrey Earnst of Arthur won a five-team meet by more than a half-minute. Earnst finished the 3-mile race in 17 minutes, 57 seconds. Ethan Lehman of team champion Sullivan-Okaw Valley was second in 18:37.

In the girls' race, Susan Ponder of Tuscola edged Teutopolis' Megan Weichman for first place. Ponder was clocked in 23:53 for a four-second victory. Teutopolis earned the team title, and Sullivan-Okaw Valley placed second.

In girls' tennis

At Champaign. Emily Lydic did not lose a game at No. 3 singles and combined with Suemin Sophie Kim for a 6-0, 6-1 doubles win as Centennial rolled to a 9-0 victory against Normal West.

At Urbana. The Tigers were swept by Paris 9-0, but Zama Madela and Valentina Stafford each forced their opponent to a third-set tiebreaker. At No. 2 singles, Stafford's match was decided by an 11-9 third-set score.
