Wednesday's prep highlights: STM girls' golfers sparkle
In boys’ golf
■ At Monticello. Led by Kyle Kaufmann, the host Sages swept the Nos. 2-6 individual spots and rolled to a 28-stroke win in a three-team meet at Monticello Golf Club. Kaufmann shot a 42, 1 shot behind the medalist. Sam Mulligan (46) finished seventh for third-place Sullivan.
■ At Savoy. Seth Icenogle of Tuscola won medalist honors in a scorecard playoff with teammate Eddie Durham, and the pair led the Warriors to a 20-stroke victory against Champaign Central at the University of Illinois Orange Course. Icenogle and Durham each shot 40s. Luke Wilson led the Maroons with a 45.
In girls’ golf
■ At Monticello. Evelyn Brand shot a 39 to win medalist honors by 9 strokes and lead the Sages to a 186-268 victory against Sullivan at Monticello Golf Club. Monticello swept the top four places. Beretta Phelps (54) was the top scorer for the Redskins.
■ At Savoy. Bella Ritz of Champaign Central earned medalist honors with a 44, but Tuscola had the next three individual scoring leaders and claimed the team victory 205-208 at the University of Illinois Blue Course. Runner-up Taylor Reifsteck led the Warriors with a 46.
■ At Urbana. Taylor During and Caroline Dodds each shot 45s to lead St. Thomas More to victory in a three-team meet at Stone Creek Golf Club. The Sabers finished 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Mahomet-Seymour. Lexus Hornsby (46) of the Bulldogs placed third.
■ St. Joseph-Ogden 2, Oakwood 0. Karlie Baker belted five service aces and totaled 18 assists to lead the host Spartans to victory. Shelby Simmons contributed 15 kills and three digs to the win.
■ Timberwolf Tip-Off. Watseka won twice at Cissna Park to improve to 4-0 and advance to the championship pool Saturday. The Warriors defeated Milford 25-10, 25-22, behind Hayley Gray’s five kills, five digs, three service aces and one block.
Watseka then outbattled Clifton Central 25-22, 25-20 as Gray totaled 10 digs. Maddie Pfingsten had 17 assists in each match for the Warriors.
■ At Paxton. Grant Iverson and Nick Porter combined to win the Panther Paarlauf 6 x 1-mile partner relay run, leading PBL to a 6-18 victory against Villa Grove/Heritage. The Iverson/Porter pairing finished in 31 minutes, 5 seconds. The Panthers swept the top four places, with the first three counting in the team scoring. The duo of Gage Knoll and Bryce Benefield led VG/Heritage, placing fifth in 36:30.
PBL was the lone school to enter a full team in the girls’ division. The Panther duo of Paige Kuester and Audrey Bloomquist won in 42:43.
