Teams of the Week: Sages cross-country in spotlight
The Sages won the 49-school girls’ meet at Peoria’s Detweiller Park, and their boys’ team was victorious out of 48 competing schools. Led by Matt Norvell, the top five boys finished within 43 seconds of one another. Led by Hannah Houska, the top five girls finished within 46 seconds of one another. On the same day, Monticello’s boys’ and girls’ middle school teams won at Shelbyville’s invitational.
SALT FORK VOLLEYBALL
The Storm (8-2), coached by Brent Bowman, swept all four opponents in straight sets to win the five-school Westville Invitational. The Storm got it done at the service line. Britton Seaman landed seven aces, Allie Trosper had five, Emilie McFadden had five and Jenny Kimbro also had five. McFadden, Kimbro, Seaman and Kalyn Learnard all had at least 10 kills during the tournament.
CERRO GORDO/D-W/BEMENT FOOTBALL
In a game between programs ranked ninth in the state polls, the 2A Broncos topped Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 28-7. Through three games, CG/D-W/Bement is averaging 8.5 yards per running play. The defense also is contributing points. For the season, three Broncos have returned either interceptions or fumbles for TDs: Steve Isbell, Sean Reed and Quinton Walker.
JUDAH CHRISTIAN SOCCER
The Tribe (3-0-2) posted a win (Schlarman) and a tie (Blue Ridge) as Lewis Nisbet scored seven of the nine goals. Max Berry had two goals and three assists for a team that has posted shutouts in two of its matches. Teammates who had at least one assist for the week for coach Graham Berry’s team were Cameron Cornell, George Ibrahim, James Krehbiel and Chris Valdovinos.
