Saturday's highlights (9/21): PBL volleyball takes title



■ At Edwardsville. COREY WHITE finished eighth to help Champaign Central to fourth place at the 21-team boys’ race. HANNAH SHINEW led Central’s girls.



■ At Decatur. KAYLA GOULD’S 119 led last-place Central at the 12-team Eisenhower Invitational.



■ Danville 2, Normal Community 0. Dakota Gash and Gracson Torres scored and Cameron Griffin made six saves as the Vikings moved to 2-0-1 in Big 12 play. “Solid defending and timely attacks were the key today,” Danville coach Chris Griffin said. “Overall a very gritty and tough game by the entire team and we look to build on this win as we go forward.”

■ Uni High 1, Salt Fork 0. Randall Hornbaker scored on a penalty kick and Tristan Gurtler had a shutout for the Illineks.

■ Edwardsville 3, Urbana 0. The visiting Tigers fell behind 2-0

■ St. Thomas More 2, Oakwood 0. DENNIS FREEMAN scored twice and COLIN KELLEY had the shutout for the shorthanded Sabers. LANDON TURNER had five saves in the loss.

■ St. Thomas More 1, Metamora 0. Freeman scored and Kelley had 14 saves as the visiting Sabers, playing for the second time Saturday, continued their strong defensive play.

■ At Rockton. SAM PLUMBER scored Centennial’s only goal in losses to Dundee (1-0) and Jacobs (2-1). NATE BLOCK had eight saves on the day. 



■ Charger Invitational. Urbana’s GABI RAJIC won the 50- and 100-yard free as the Tigers placed ninth at the 15-team meet in Champaign.

Uni High was an area-best fifth behind third-place finishes in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. Claire Dickerson, Lauren Monahan, Claire Michael and Maddie Nelson swam legs on both relays. Nelson also placed third in the 200 free. 

Oakwood’s PRESLEY FLETCHER was third in the 1-meter diving.



■ At Urbana. KATIE CARROLL won at No. 1 singles for Urbana in an 8-1 loss to Bradley-Bourbonnais.


■ At Bloomington. Centennial’s WILLA OLSON tied for fifth place at No. 1 singles and teamed with SOPHIE KIM to tie for fifth at No. 2 doubles as the Chargers placed seventh at the Bloomington Invite. Gressa Olson (No. 5 singles) and Jacklyn Gunn (No. 6) also tied for fifth for Centennial. Belleville West won the tournament.



■ At Paxton. SARAH WATTS had nine kills, KAILEY KLEINERT had eight and KELLYN MAYNARD added seven as Paxton-Buckley-Loda beat Lexington 25-13, 12-25, 25-16 to win the PBL Classic. EVE BAHLER had 20 assists and 14 service points and JORI MAYNARD had 13 digs for the Panthers (11-5-1), who also beat St. Joseph-Ogden 14-25, 27-26, 15-13 in championship pool play.

■ At Windsor. KARLI ALLEN had 16 kills and MORGAN LITTLE had 41 assists as Tuscola went 1-2.

■ At Farmer City. Led by GABBY PEARL (31 kills, nine blocks), AMBER BLAZEK (29 kills), MEGAN TSEVELEKOS (nine aces) and TAYLOR BUILTA (28 digs), Blue Ridge went 4-0 to win its own tournament. The Knights (20-2) placed Blazek, Pearl and EMILY ZELHART on the all-tourney team.

■ At Mount Pulaski. Champaign Central went 3-2 in tournament play.

■ At New Berlin. ALEXA JONES had 36 kills and GILLIAN JONES added 27 kills and 131/2 blocks for Argenta-Oreana, which went 3-2 in tourney play.

■ At Newton. ABBY SMITH had 28 kills, 14 aces and 11 blocks as Tri-County went 2-3 at the Newton/St. Anthony tournament.
