Thursday's highlights: Bott sizzles with a 61

In boys' golf

■ At Danville. After bogeying the second hole Thursday at Harrison Park Golf Course, Andy Bott knew he would need to plot a comeback.

“I really wanted to get back to even (par on the front nine),” the Bismarck-Henning senior said.

Bott accomplished much more than that, embarking on a remarkable round en route to medalist honors at the Vermilion Valley Conference tournament. By the time he was done, Bott had fired a 10-under-par 61 to finish 18 strokes ahead of his nearest pursuer.

“I’m still shocked by it,” he said. “That’s ridiculous. To shoot that well and have — I only had 25 putts — that’s easily the best round I’ve ever played.”

Bott followed his 3-putt bogey on No. 2 with a birdie, an eagle and a birdie, eventually cutting his score to 4 under entering the back nine. Then, he just kept piling up the birdies, finishing with nine overall.

“My putter was just on fire, and I was just really hitting the ball well (Thursday),” said Bott, whose previous best competitive round at Harrison Park was a 67.

Two teammates joined Bott in the top four. Noah Campbell shot an 81 for third place, and David Warren (83) placed fourth. Oakwood’s Brandon Rowe (79) was the runner-up.
