RANTOUL — Mahomet-Seymour edged Normal U-High to win its first Corn Belt Conference meet Saturday. The Bulldogs totaled 31 points as their top five runners placed in the top 12.
“We’ve worked extremely hard by trying to win this thing for years,” M-S coach Neal Garrison said. “This is the 28th year Mahomet has been in the Corn Belt Conference, and this is the first time we won it. U-High is a phenomenal team.”
M-S’ winning effort was made possible by Alex Keeble (15 minutes, 38.3 seconds), Jackson Powell (16:07.8), William Wolf (16:09.2), Andrew Walmer (16:21.6) and James Williams (16:31.3).
Keeble placed second behind Normal U-High’s Alexander Bruno (15:34.9.
“Bruno is a tough kid and out-kicked me,” Keeble said. “That was humbling a lot. I tried something new, going out fast. It worked a little, but I died in the middle.”
In the girls’ race, M-S’ Lauren Whitehouse finished second (18:43.2) as did her team, U-High taking the title.
