UNITY GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Coach Gary Wieneke’s Rockets had a top four pack within 35 seconds of one another and secured the area’s best Class 1A state finish at Peoria’s Detweiller Park, fifth place. Unity came in ahead of two schools it trailed at either the regional or sectional meets. Taylor Renfroe and Sisay Eisenmenger led the way.

ST. JOSEPH-OGDEN VOLLEYBALL
The Spartans’ nine-match winning streak came to an end in the sectional finals, but the area’s surprise team (seeded fourth in the conference and regional tournaments, winning both) closed out the year as one of the state’s top 16 Class 2A teams. Shelby Simmons signs a letter of intent today with Eastern Illinois.
Playing top-rated Maroa-Forsyth, which won its first 10 games by an average of 38.4 points, coach Dale Schuring’s Knights were the first team to score three touchdowns against the Class 1A Trojans this year and the first to hold a fourth-quarter lead, dropping a 24-19 second-round decision.
Playing at home against traditional Class 4A power Rock Island Alleman, the Bulldogs fell behind 14-0 but fought back with Joe Kenney’s passing and pulled within 21-20 in the fourth quarter. Alleman added two TDs in the final 41/2 minutes to secure its quarterfinal berth.
