Saturday's prep highlights: Arcola football overwhelms South Beloit

In football

Arcola 42, South Beloit 0. Austin Hopkins rushed for 206 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries to lift the host Purple Riders (1-0), with Beau Jones throwing for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Pedro Guana added 86 rushing yards and a TD.

In volleyball

Crosstown Classic

Maroons take fifth. Champaign Central beat Mundelein 25-12, 25-22 and Glenbrook North 26-28, 25-20, 25-21 to place fifth at Libertyville's Crosstown Classic. For the two-day tournament, Rylee Hinton compiled 48 kills for the Maroons (4-2) and Lydia Roberts distributed 64 assists.

Cissna Park Tip-Off Tournament

PBL sweeps. Paxton-Buckley-Loda (4-1) beat Schlarman and Armstrong-Potomac behind 12 kills from Addison Oyer and 38 assists from Abbie Schmidt. Schlarman beat A-P as Emma Bogen led the Hilltoppers (3-2) with 13 kills on the day. Sarah Porter had 16 kills for A-P (2-3) against PBL. Milford defeated Kankakee and Clifton Central as Kaylee Warren finished with 45 assists for the Bearcats (3-2). Fisher (0-5) lost both its matches to Momence and Hoopseton Area. Shelbee Owens paced Fisher with 17 kills.

Blue Ridge Invitational

Broncos place first. After sweeping Cornerstone, DeLand-Weldon, Judah Christian and Villa Grove, Cerro Gordo edged Blue Ridge 20-25, 25-23, 15-12 to win the 10-team tournament title. Sydney Walker (40 kills) and Ella Mann (87 assists) led the offense for Cerro Gordo (6-1). Polly Reynolds led Blue Ridge (6-1) with 29 kills. Heritage (5-1) swept Judah Christian (4-3) for third place, with Gracyn Allen (29 kills) and Olivia Sorensen (88 assists) sparking the Hawks on the day.

Ridgeview Tournament

A-O takes second. Argenta-Oreana defeated Iroquois West, Decatur Eisenhower and Ridgeview, but lost to tournament champion Ottawa Marquette. Maddy Tipsword (17 kills) paced A-O (4-2).


St. Joseph-Ogden 2, Mahomet-Seymour 0. The host Spartans swept the Bulldogs (1-1) 25-15, 25-13 in nonconference action. Payton Vallee sparked a balanced offensive showing by SJ-O (2-0) with six kills, while Katelyn Berry chipped in five kills.

In boys' soccer

Peoria Christian Charger Classic

Sabers win title. St. Thomas More beat Chicago Christian 2-0 in the semifinals and then held off Bloomington Cornerstone 2-1 in the title game to repeat as tournament champions. Joe Sellett and Wade Baillon scored in the semifinal win, with Jack Aubry and Taylor Crawford netting goals for STM (4-1) in the title match.

Uni High Shootout

Bunnies earn title. Fisher/Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley beat Blue Ridge 2-0, Oakwood/Salt Fork 5-0 and Uni High 1-0 to win the tournament title. Ethan Kasper made 19 saves on the day in collecting three shutouts for the Bunnies (5-0), with Caleb Bleich scoring four goals at the tournament.

Boilermaker Invitational

Maroons take third. Champaign Central lost 2-1 to Bradley-Bourbonnais in the semifinals, but beat Manteno 4-1 in the third-place match. Santiago Rodriquez and Reynaldo Zarco each scored two goals for the Maroons (3-1).

Bulldog Invitational

Close calls for M-S. Mahomet-Seymour placed fourth at its own four-team tournament, losing to Mt. Zion on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 tie and then losing 1-0 to Washington. Ethan Mansfield had the lone goal for M-S (1-2-1).


Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond 3, Mt. Pulaski 0. Natalia Beachy, Aiden Stewart and Manaye Morfey each tallied a goal for the visiting Knights (1-1-1).

Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 2, Judah Christian 1. Keanu King and Drew Reifsteck each scored for the visiting Blue Devils (2-0), while Joseph Linsner netted the lone goal for the Tribe (1-2).

Danville 4, St. Joseph-Ogden 1. The host Vikings stayed perfect early in the season behind two goals and an assist from Kevin Sanchez. Gustavo Segura added a goal and an assist for Danville (2-0) against SJ-O (1-3).

In girls' golf

At Bloomington. Champaign Central placed eighth at the 18-team Saints Shootout at Prairie Vista Golf Course with a 368, while Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (391) wound up 10th. Shannon Spangler of GCMS shot an 81 to tie for ninth overall. Mackenzie McCoy (86) and Alaea Francis (87) had the top two scores for Central.

In boys' cross-country

At Normal. Danville placed fourth and Centennial finished 10th at the 11-team Normal West Invitational. Michael Moreman clocked the best time for Danville with an eighth-place showing in 16 minutes, 11.9 seconds, while Luke Manolakes placed 11th in 16:26.5 to lead Centennial.

In girls' cross-country

At Normal. Champaign Central placed ninth, Centennial finished 11th and Danville wound up in 12th place at the 12-team Normal West Invitational. Shannon Tang of Champaign Central had the best area finish, placing 24th in 20 minutes, 28.6 seconds.

In girls' tennis

At Bradley. Centennial beat Bradley-Bourbonnais (6-1), Lincoln-Way East (5-2) and Plainfield South (5-2) in a quadrangular. Gurveena Singh and Angela Xu won three singles matches for Centennial.
