Why he was chosen: The Illineks sophomore scored the game-winning goal in Uni’s super-sectional victory against Beecher, helping lead the team back to the state tournament for the second time in four years. He finished the season with nine goals and six assists.
The Warriors swept Unity 25-21, 25-21 to claim their first regional title since 2008 and their second in the last 23 years. Courtney Brewer dished out 17 assists and notched five kills, and Nicole Lough tallied seven kills and six digs.

DECATUR — The Class 1A Decatur St. Teresa Sectional cross-country meet pitted seven of the state’s Top 10 boys’ teams in competition, meaning two of those teams wouldn’t make it to next week’s state meet.
But for Unity, Saturday’s race wasn’t even a contest.
FITHIAN — Jon Davis planned to sleep in until about 7:30 before Saturday’s Class 1A Decatur St. Teresa Sectional, but he woke up around 6 a.m. and couldn’t fall back asleep.
So the two-time Class 1A state cross-country champion decided to think.
“I just said, ‘Well, I’m up,’ ” he said. “It was a good time to just sit there and reflect.”
URBANA — Two days after Gary Wieneke was admitted at Carle Foundation Hospital after having what’s been categorized as a stroke, the former Illinois and Unity High School cross-country and track coach was in good spirits, according to friend and colleague Dike Stirrett.
