Teams of the Week: Watseka volleyball in spotlight

All-tournament picks Taylor Bauer, Natalie Castonguay and Hayley Gray led the Warriors to the championship of the Manteno tournament. Coach Krista Pufahl’s team won four of five matches in two-set sweeps. Castonguay had 56 digs, Bauer had 50 kills and Gray 13 blocks for the day.


Twin City c-c meet postponed

Meet officials have postponed the running of today's boys' and girl' 3-mile Twin City cross-country races, due to the extreme heat. The meet was rescheduled for Oct. 8, still at Illini Meadows, with the girls' event starting at 4:45 p.m.

STM's Hess keeps his cool

CHRISMAN — Nick Hess put himself in position for success long before he reached the starting line for Saturday’s 32nd Chrisman Cowchip Classic cross-country meet.

“We stress hydration,” the St. Thomas More senior said. “I’ve been hydrating all week.”

St. Thomas More 2, Fisher 0. Tori McCoy’s nine kills led a balanced attack that carried the visiting Sabers to a 25-13, 25-10 win. courtney wax and Lexi Wallen contributed seven kills apiece for STM. Jessie Head racked up 11 blocks for Fisher.

Saturday's prep highlights: Storm victorious

Salt Fork 30, Arcola 0. Jacob Hughes scored in the third quarter on a 1-yard run in the resumption of Friday’s weather-suspended game. When stormy weather again interrupted play later in the quarter, the game was called final. Salt Fork’s Taylor Kirby finished with 131 yards rushing.

St. Thomas More 2, Urbana 1. Lexi Wallen’s double-double (15 kills, 26 digs) helped the Sabers fend off host Urbana 25-23, 25-27, 25-23. Tori McCoy contributed 12 kills and four service aces for STM. Anna Billman led the Tigers with 10 blocks, and Chelsea Skinner added 10 digs.
