Best of Fred: No. 39 — Nights at the race track

Hardly a year goes by where I don’t cover between 100 and 140 high school basketball games.

Inevitably, in mid-March, someone will ask me the score of a game I saw in mid-November.

Of all the games I’ve seen, there’s only one score I actually remember. It was in January 1991, when Sullivan’s girls’ basketball team won at Decatur St. Teresa, 115-15.

In a battle between schools unbeaten in Big 12 Conference play, the Vikings made the most of their eight shots, scoring twice, while Normal Community (8-2-1 overall) couldn’t find the net on any of its 14 attempts. Mikee Maniquis and Gracson Torres scored for Danville.

Recently: Hit a home run in seven consecutive games. On Friday, she hit two two-run homers to account for all the runs in a 4-3 win against Unity.

Winning pitcher Hunter Hart (7-1) struck out nine in four innings for host St. Joseph-Ogden (16-5), which got a three-run home run from Louis Acklin. Aaron Woller went 2 for 2, including a solo home run, in the victory, and teammate Chase Gadau had two hits and four RBI. Henry Gerritson hit a home run for the Raiders.
