Flessner breaks up duel
CHAMPAIGN – Centennial's Jake Flessner singled home Don McDuffee in the bottom of the sixth to break up a pitchers' duel and give the Chargers a 1-0 baseball win against Danville on Wednesday.
McDuffee (4-1) and reliever Justin Johnson combined on a six-hit shutout. Dennis Forrest gave up six hits for Danville.
A-O 4, Unity 3. Argenta-Oreana scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and held on to defeat host Unity. Dylan Whicker went 3 for 3 with two RBI for the Bombers, and teammate Ross Ferrell added three hits.
Tyler Bialeschki doubled twice for the Rockets (7-13), who also received two hits from Kyle Negangard.
Milford 7, B-H 2. Trevor Lucht drove in two runs to lead Milford against visiting B-H. Lucht and teammate Kyle Evans each had two hits. Matt LeCleir and Branden Smith had two hits apiece for the Blue Devils.
Pontiac 7, Rantoul 2. Pontiac scored five runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie against visiting Rantoul (8-11).
Maroa-Forsyth 4, Tuscola 0. Kurtis Kinyoun pitched a three-hitter and struck out 11 for Tuscola in an Okaw Valley contest against visiting Maroa-Forsyth. Kinyoun (1-2) also had two of the Warriors' five hits.
Tri-County 9 Villa Grove 8. Tri-County scored in the top of the ninth to complete a comeback from an 8-1 deficit against host Villa Grove. Curtis Washburn had two hits for the Titans (7-8). Rob Renfrow drove in three runs and Jesse Shrum had two hits for the Blue Devils.
Arcola 5, Cerro Gordo 2. Beau Fishel had two hits and two RBI to lead Arcola past host Cerro Gordo. Winning pitcher Garrison Stenger pitched a three-hitter and contributed two hits and an RBI.
Sullivan 7, Monticello 6. Winning pitcher Paul Hrvol went 3 for 3 with an RBI and Chad Frerichs belted two home runs to lead Sullivan at home. Chris Marrs also homered for the Redskins (10-3).
Olympia 4, M-S 1. Olympia scored three runs in the first inning without hitting the ball out of the infield en route to a victory against visiting Mahomet-Seymour. Bob Schroeder had two of the Bulldogs' six hits.
A-P 1, Westville 0. Tyler Davis and Kevin Burton combined on a shutout, and Armstrong-Potomac scored in the top of the eighth inning on Jeff Creighton's single to defeat Westville.
Davis struck out 16 and limited the Tigers to two hits in seven innings. Burton pitched a scoreless eighth for the win. Losing pitcher Dave Toth went the distance, throwing a three-hitter and striking out 14.
Okaw Valley 1, East Central 0. Visiting East Central suffered its first Little Okaw Valley defeat despite a strong pitching performance by Hunter Tweedy. The junior did not allow an earned run and walked one while holding Okaw Valley to seven hits in six innings.
SJ-O 4, Tri-Point 2. Freshman Blake Hoveln threw a three-hitter and struck out nine for St. Joseph-Ogden in a home game. Ben Rogel had three of the Spartans' four hits, including two doubles.
G-RF 5, Schlarman 4. Korie Vire improved to 7-0 and Georgetown-Ridge Farm overcame a 3-1 deficit with four runs in the fifth inning at Danville. Logan Ross had two hits and an RBI for the Buffaloes. Tommy Petersak drove in two runs for the Hilltoppers.
Salt Fork 4, Oakwood 3. Salt Fork built a 4-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings and held on at Jamaica. Matt Bowen homered for the Storm.
Fisher 9, LeRoy 1. Nick Neef drove in two runs and John Demblon pitched a five-hitter to lead visiting Fisher.
A-L 5, Sangamon Valley 2. Arthur-Lovington scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning against host Sangamon Valley. Sheldon Miller drove in a run and scored once for the Knights.
St. Teresa 7, Clinton 2. Clinton committed six errors and allowed six unearned runs on the road. Ian DeJaynes had two hits and an RBI for the Maroons.
In softball:
Central 6, M-S 2. Monica Rondon had a triple and two RBI to lead Champaign Central on the road against Mahomet-Seymour. Kimberly Mowry contributed three hits to the win.
Salt Fork 7, Oakwood 1. Hannah Darr pitched a two-hitter and drove in three runs to lead Salt Fork at Fithian.
Darr struck out 12 batters in the Vermilion Valley Conference game. Mallory Weber had two doubles and two RBI for the Storm (12-8).
B-H 3, Milford 0. Frankie Shoaf threw a no-hitter, striking out six, in Bismarck-Henning's home game. Elyse Lippert and Hannah Ohl had two hits apiece for the Blue Devils (7-10).
Rantoul 1, Normal U-High 0. Kelsey Gass singled home Melissa McClain in the top of the eighth for visiting Rantoul in a Corn Belt contest. Winning pitcher Hanna Mennenga, who struck out 13 and walked one, limited the Pioneers to three hits.
Westville 12, A-P 1. Kayla Bryant went 3 for 5 with two doubles and five RBI to lead Westville past host Armstrong-Potomac. Brittany Martin had two hits for the Tigers, and Kara Carter accounted for both of A-P's hits.
Villa Grove 5, Shiloh 2. Kilee Hoffman went 3 for 3 with an RBI to lead Villa Grove (5-9) at home. Lauren Bogle was 4 for 4 for Shiloh.
Blue Ridge 3, Ridgeview 2. Freshman Jordan Wheeler struck out 12 for visiting Blue Ridge. Jade O'Neal and Melinda Wilson each had two hits for the Knights. Lauren Kellar had four hits for Ridgeview.
Cerro Gordo 3, Arcola 2. Host Cerro Gordo scored twice in the seventh inning. Kaci Sharp was 2 for 3 with a sacrifice and two RBI for the Broncos. Winning pitcher Beth Pickerill struck out 11. Kim Fortney and Taylor Clark each had two hits for Arcola.
LeRoy 1, Fisher 0. Stephanie Hintz drove in the game's only run and Sarah Hintz pitched a three-hit shutout for host LeRoy.
Monticello 13, Centennial 1. Krysten Wileaver went 3 for 3 and scored three runs for the visiting Sages.
SJ-O 5, Tri-Point 2. Aubrey Welch drove in two runs and Jenna Slifer struck out 10 to lead undefeated St. Joseph-Ogden (21-0) at home.
In boys' track & field:
At Champaign. Ian Wells and Denzel Stewart each won two individual events and ran on two first-place relay teams to lead Champaign Central to victory in a three-team meet. Wells won the 800 meters and long jump. Stewart placed first in the 100 and 200.
In boys' tennis:
Urbana 8, Eisenhower 1. Max Giannetta won in straight sets at No. 1 singles and combined with Nabeel Rizwan to capture No. 1 doubles to lead the Tigers to a Big 12 victory.
Centennial 9, Danville 0. David Ruedi did not lose a game at No. 1 singles and joined Billy Regan for a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles for the host Chargers.
In girls' soccer:
Mount Zion 2, Danville 0. Goalkeeper Devon Watkins had 10 saves for the Vikings (1-8-1) on the road.
