Monticello soccer starts fast

MONTICELLO – Lois Cryder wasn't sure what to expect from her Monticello boys' soccer team after graduating 11 seniors from last year's group that reached the sectional finals. After a season-opening 8-0 win Monday against an upstart Heyworth program, she's got a better understanding of her Sages.

"It was a good start. Heyworth played hard and I was pleased with the way we played," Cryder said. "We're a work-in-progress. For a first game against an opponent that is very young and doesn't have as much experience as we do, I thought we handled ourselves pretty well."

Monticello didn't allow a shot on goal.

"I thought we played very well in the midfield, especially," Cryder said.

Brett Winterbottom notched a pair of goals and an assist. Dylan Lambert also scored and added two assists.

"Brett had a very good night, as did Dylan," Cryder said. "Both of those young men are seniors, so it was very nice to get that from them."
