Benjamin lifts Hoopeston/B-H soccer

CHAMPAIGN – Matt Benjamin's return to soccer got off to an impressive start Tuesday.

Benjamin, who returned to soccer after playing football last fall, scored a first-half goal to help Hoopeston/Bismarck-Henning defeat Centennial 2-0 in a prep soccer opener.

Judah Christian 4, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 1. Alex Berry scored twice for the host Tribe.

St. Thomas More 7, Clifton Central 1. John Tabb scored three goals and Travis Johnson added a pair for the Sabers, who won the first home game in program history and the first game as a member of the Sangamon Valley Conference.

Blue Ridge 9, Heyworth 1. Jonathan Malone scored five goals and Kevin Price added three for the visiting Knights.

Oakwood 1, Watseka 1. Austin Haskins scored for the visiting Comets, who outshot the Warriors 18-3. Brede Parker scored for Watseka.

St. Teresa 6, Unity 1. Patrick Mannon scored a first-half goal for the visiting Rockets.

In girls golf

At Savoy. Medalist Lizzy Dombroski shot 2-over 39 on the UI Blue Course to lead Centennial to a 184-191 victory against St. Thomas More.

At Savoy. Jane Choo shot 49 to earn medalist honors as Champaign Central defeated Bloomington 207-211.

At Mattoon. Medalist Charlotte Goss shot 40 at Meadow View Golf Course in a triangular. Mahomet-Seymour (197) finished 1 stroke behind Mattoon.

In boys golf

At Danville. Bismarck-Henning's Stephen Krout fired a 44 at Harrison Park to secure medalist honors in a three-team meet. Hoopeston's Brad Lawson had a 45 and Iroquois West's Kyle Pool a 46.

At Danville. Watseka cruised to a 176-218 victory against Westville behind medalist Mike Musk's 42. Derek Wengert added a 43.

At Momence. CPCI's Klinton Smith (46) shared medalist honors with two others in a three-team meet at South Shore Golf Course.

In tennis

Centennial 6, Bloomington 3. Allison Hansen (No. 1) and Maria Mears (No. 2) earned straight-set singles victories then teamed for a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles as the Chargers cruised at home.

In volleyball

Paxton-Buckley-Loda 25-25, Oakwood 21-8. Allison Kolakowski had nine kills and Kelsey Stagen collected five aces for the host Panthers.

At Cissna Park. Taylor Jean had 11 assists as Fisher beat Tri-Point 25-11, 25-11 in the CPCI Timberwolf Tip-Off. The Bunnies knocked off Momence 12-25, 25-19, 25-23 behind Olivia Downs' 30 digs.
