Guerreros lead 'Toppers to title
STREATOR – All-tournament pick Refugio Guerrero scored a pair of goals to lead Schlarman to the boys' soccer tournament title Saturday. The Hilltoppers finished the pool-play event 3-0.
Guerrero's unassisted goal lifted the Hilltoppers to a 1-0 victory against Paw Paw. Keeper Nathan Tissier made five saves to preserve the shutout.
Guerrero and Brock Drews scored in a 2-0 win against Coal City.
Jerardo Guerrero scored a second-half goal in a 1-0 victory against host Streator. Tissier made four saves in the win.
Chris Alvarez, Zane Dillon and Michael Batement also were selected to the all-tourney team for the Hilltoppers (3-0).
At Bradley. Jose Tapia scored on a free kick and Danville held Kankakee without a shot in the second half, but the Vikings lost 2-1 thanks to a pair of early goals at the Bradley-Bourbonnais tournament. Kankakee was held to four shots in the match but scored twice in the first nine minutes as Danville fell to 0-3.
Earlier, Lisle beat the Vikings 3-0 despite being outshot.
Judah Christian 3, Monticello 2. Alex Berry scored unassisted in the second half to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Tribe (2-0).
Jason Mills and Jung Huan Lee scored in the first half for Judah.
Jacob Hanselman scored both goals for the visiting Sages (2-1).
At Quincy. Julian Threlkeld made 28 saves over two matches, but Urbana lost 5-0 to Collinsville and 1-0 to Geneva at the Midwest Classic. The Tigers are 2-2.
Edwardsville 7, Centennial 2. Ben Flodstrom scored a pair of second-half goals, but the Chargers couldn't overcome a 3-0 halftime deficit. Centennial (0-2) goalkeeper Alexx Dahl made 10 saves.
At Urbana. Blue Ridge and Urbana University High both finished the Illineks' tournament 2-0-1, but the hosts were declared the winners thanks to a better goal average.
Jonathan Malone scored for the Knights and Dan Lilly scored for the Illineks in a 1-1 tie. Nile Hamer had 12 saves for Uni. Mark Eckhoff made five saves for Blue Ridge.
Uni beat Oakwood 3-0 thanks to two goals from Lilly. Patrick Wong also connected.
The Illineks also beat Fisher/GCMS 4-0 as Lilly scored twice. Chris Mathy and Wong also scored in the win.
Blue Ridge beat Fisher/GCMS 5-1 thanks to two goals and an assist from Kevin Price. Jonathan Malone, Trent Butler and Nick Builta also scored.
The Knights also beat Oakwood 2-1 as Price and Malone each scored off a pass from the other.
At Cissna Park. All-tournament selections Taylor Jean and Olivia Downs led Fisher to the championship match of the Timberwolf Tip-Off, but the Bunnies lost 22-25, 25-22, 25-20 to Momence.
CPCI defeated Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 25-21, 12-25, 25-14 for third place. Lauren Bauer, Taylor Redeker and Haley Dodd made the all-tourney team for the hosts.
In girls' tennis:
At Champaign. Maria Mears lost 6-2, 6-4 in the third-place match at No. 2 singles to lead host Centennial to an eighth-place finish at the Charger Invitational.
The Chargers finished with nine points, tied with Belleville East. Homewood-Flossmoor (31), which won two singles titles, claimed the title.
