Centennial volleyball takes title

CHAMPAIGN – Led by all-tournament picks Cori Harris, Melanie Moore and Morgan Leach, Centennial won its own volleyball tournament Saturday.

Harris had 28 kills and six aces; Leach had 27 kills, nine blocks and six aces; and Moore added 87 assists and 13 aces as the Chargers finished 5-0.

Led by Maeve Aquino, Champaign Central went 3-2 and won the bronze pool.

Mahomet-Seymour went 2-3 as Allison Gwinup had 35 service points, Emma Cabutti had 20 kills, Corrie Magrini had 48 assists and Alyssa Drollinger had five blocks.

At Mattoon. Chelsee McMahan had 19 kills and four aces and Tabitha Davis added 11 kills and seven blocks as Sullivan went 2-3 in tournament play.

At Iroquois West. Hoopeston Area's Kelsey Norton; Iroquois West's Hilary Zirkle; Blue Ridge's Kaitlyn Zelhart and Danielle Thompson; and Watseka's Katie Cowan and Jessica Allhands were all-tournament picks.

In boys' soccer:

Mahomet-Seymour 8, Unity 1. Joel Clark scored three goals and Brandon Fritz added a goal and an assist for visiting Mahomet-Seymour.

Monticello 2, Uni High 1. Jacob Hanselman and Thomas Atkins scored in the second half for the visiting Sages (4-1-1). Tyler Mumm made seven saves for Monticello.

Dan Lilly had Urbana University High's goal.

Blue Ridge 4, Schlarman 1. Tyler Malone had three goals and Kevin Price had three assists for the host Knights (7-0-1), who got six saves from Mark Eckhoff.

At Springfield. Jacob Bushue's three goals weren't enough in Centennial's 5-4 loss to Rockton Hononegah. The Chargers also lost to host Sacred Heart-Griffin 3-2 despite goals by Jesus Sanchez and Garrett Sommer.

At Quincy. Dennis Forrest had a goal and two assists as Danville beat Chicago Parker at the Quincy Notre Dame tournament. Corey Pinchon had 10 saves, including one on a penalty kick.

In a 2-1 loss to Maine South, Roman Tapia scored for the Vikings (2-4-1).

Pinchon and Jared Patterson made the all-tournament team.

Iroquois West 2, Reed-Custer 0. Tony Ochoa and Giovanni Vergara scored and Hector Reyes made seven saves at Braidwood.

In cross-country:

Charleston Invitational. Nicole Choquette finished second to help Urbana to a second-place showing in the nine-team girls' event. Marissa Marrone was eighth for the Tigers.

Fourth-place Danville was led by Kim Carter (seventh place) and Destiny Carter (14th).

Fenton Invitational. Neli Crawford led 11th-place Centennial with a 28th-place finish.

In swimming:

Uni High 124, Olympia 44. Sian Best and Milee Nelson each won two events as the Illineks rolled on the road.

In golf:

Blue Ridge Invitational. Monticello got top 10 finishes from Clint Brubaker (78), Nick Huisinga (79), Cain Burgener (83) and Daly O'Brien (84) to win the seven-team boys' event.

Villa Grove's Ben Harned (84) and Dylan Greger (87) placed in the top 10 as the Blue Devils finished fourth.

In tennis:

Pekin Invitational. Emma Peck won at No. 2 singles and Carrie Zillman teamed with Courtney Hart to finish second at No. 2 doubles to lead Danville to second place. Kassandro Patino was third at No. 3 singles for the Vikings.

In football:

Area teams lose. Orion beat Arcola 55-0 in nonconference action. Also, host Macomb beat Paxton-Buckley-Loda 41-14.
