Success in singles gives Centennial lift

URBANA – Maria Mears, Sanjana Anil, Michaela Kearney and Emily Lydic won singles matches as Centennial edged Urbana 5-4 in a Big 12 girls' tennis match Wednesday. The Tigers went 2-1 in doubles but couldn't hold the lead. Katarina Marjanovic won in singles and doubles for Urbana.

In cross-country:

At Champaign. Kim Carter's first-place finish helped Danville beat Champaign Central in the girls' race. Karen Anderson and Julianne Marron were third and fourth, respectively, for the Vikings. Julia Smith was second for the Maroons.

Central won the boys' race as Jon Picchietti, Alex Goodlad and Daniel Coleman finished 3-5. Danville's Matt Cleveland was the winner, followed by Jovon Shaw.

At Hoopeston. Alex Artega and Jamie Carley finished 1-2 as St. Joseph-Ogden won the boys' race. Belinda Cohen and Lauren Houmes went 1-2 as Hoopeston Area won in girls' action.

In golf:

At Hickory Point. Nick Guth shot 39 and Seth Trolia and Andrew Lawson each shot 40 as Mahomet-Seymour placed second to Mount Zion by 1 stroke.
