Wachtel powers Sabers' victory

PAXTON – Erin Wachtel had 20 assists and five digs to lead St. Thomas More to a 25-17, 25-13 victory against Paxton-Buckley-Loda on Thursday in the Sangamon Valley Conference volleyball tournament.

Becca Millage and Jenna Einck each belted eight kills for the Sabers, while Megan Casagrande and Morgan Buerkett added four blocks apiece.

Taylor Rubarts had 11 digs and five kills for PBL.

In other SVC tourney matches:

– Riley Schroeder had nine kills for Iroquois West in a 25-21, 22-25, 25-14 loss to CPCI. Karlyn Wilken finished with 17 digs for IW. Samantha Stoller had 15 digs for CPCI.

– Haley Dodd had 21 assists for CPCI in a 25-21, 18-25, 25-15 victory against Clifton Central. Lauren Bauer added eight kills and Taylor Redeker contributed eight digs in the win.

– Jessica Allhands and Katie Cowan combined for 15 kills, leading Watseka to a 25-22, 26-24 victory against St. Joseph-Ogden. Cowan also had 10 digs. Rachael Graham had 14 digs and Bria Olson added five blocks for the Spartans.

At Chatham. Centennial reached the 30-victory plateau by defeating Chatham Glenwood 25-14, 25-18. Cori Harris had 10 kills and Melanie Moore added 26 assists for the Chargers.

At Champaign. Esther Kemper had 10 digs for Champaign Central in a 25-8, 25-14 loss to Bloomington.

At Cerro Gordo. Stefanie Gaitros had 18 kills to lead the Broncos to a 25-23, 24-26, 25-11 victory against Lovington. Haley Watts finished with 25 assists for Cerro Gordo, while teammate Morgan Neissle contributed 12 assists.

At Buckley. Hannah King had five service aces and Mallory Quinn had eight digs for Christ Lutheran in a 25-23, 25-22 victory against Normal Calvary.

At Atwood. Shelby Helfrich had 15 kills to lead Atwood-Hammond to a 25-20, 13-25, 25-19 victory against Okaw Valley. Abby Bialeschki added 16 digs and Britney Wierman contributed 11 blocks to the win.

At Fairbury. Abby Popejoy had 14 digs and Whitney Scurlock added six blocks in Prairie Central's 25-13, 23-25, 25-18 loss to Eureka.

At Bement. Jenni Romack had eight kills and four blocks to lead Bement to a 25-19, 26-24 victory against Arthur. Shelby Gallivan and Shelby Lust combined for 17 digs for Bement. Lust also had four service aces.

At Sullivan. Dani Gooch led Unity to a 25-13, 25-14 victory against Sullivan with seven kills and 16 assists. Rachel Cunningham contributed eight kills to the win. Tabitha Davis had five digs, three kills and two blocks for Sullivan.

At Clinton. Kia Combs had six kills and three blocks for Monticello in a 25-23, 25-23 loss to Clinton. Julie Walsh finished with 12 digs and five kills for the Sages.

At Tuscola. Lindsay Troike had six kills and two blocks for Tuscola in a 25-18, 25-21 loss to Macon Meridian. Lauren Hunt added three blocks.

At Rantoul. Despite 17 digs by Miriah Haltiwanger, Rantoul lost to Olympia 25-23, 23-25, 26-24. LaKimya Wade had seven blocks and seven kills for the Eagles.

In girls' swimming & diving:

At Champaign. Emma Newman won two individual events and contributed to two first-place relays, leading Champaign Central to a 116-70 victory against Bloomington.

Newman captured the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly. Mary Lacine also won two individual events for the Maroons, claiming the 100 and 200 freestyles.

Sara Fundator and Morgan Davis each won an individual event.
