Unity nipped at the wire Gooch leads way in loss

DECATUR – Dani Gooch scored a game-high 23 points, but it wasn't enough for the Unity girls' basketball team, which dropped a 45-44 decision to St. Teresa on Monday.

The Rockets, who got 11 points from Bailey Walden, led 30-29 going into the fourth quarter.

"Our kids played pretty hard, they played hard throughout the whole game," Unity coach Kelly Gallick said. "We led most of the game, we didn't get a couple of key rebounds when we needed to and we didn't take care of the basketball as well as we needed to down the stretch."

LeRoy 53, Lexington 44. Sarah Hintz led a trio of Panthers in double figures, scoring 13 points for host LeRoy. Ashley Walker added 12 and Nicole Bialeschki scored 11 for the Panthers.

Bismarck-Henning 44, Armstrong-Potomac 17. Jeni Free and Lori Haas each scored 10 points to lead the host Blue Devils. Jessica Brito added eight points for B-H, which allowed two points each in the first and fourth quarters.

Villa Grove 42, Sangamon Valley 27. Rachael Bishop had nine points to lead a balanced attack for the visiting Blue Devils. Tanaya Behl added eight points and Jessica Kopp scored six for Villa Grove, which led 15-2 after one quarter.

Decatur Lutheran 41, Buckley Christ Lutheran 19. Abby Armstrong had eight points and six rebounds for the host Crusaders, who trailed 13-0 after eight minutes. Kelsey Mingee added seven points for BCL.

Westville 56, Georgetown-Ridge Farm 37. Chelsie Davis scored a game-high 19 points to power the host Tigers. Taylor Ceader and Emilee James scored 10 apiece for Westville. Kaylee Nesbitt (12 points) and Karson Gragert (10) led G-RF.

Rantoul 48, Olympia 26. Shana Calhoun scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the visiting Eagles. Hanna Mennenga and April Barnett each scored 10 for Rantoul.

Prairie Central 78, Mahomet-Seymour 43. Whitney Scurlock scored a game-high 18 points to lead the host Hawks. Mandy Payne added 14 and Abby Popejoy 10 for Prairie Central. The Bulldogs got 14 points from Hillary Veitch and 12 from Alyssa Drollinger.

Salt Fork 54, Oakwood 37. Heather Baker scored 15 points to lead a balanced offensive attack for the visiting Storm. Maddison Stutsman, Katie Klemme and Britny Hoag scored 10 points apiece for Salt Fork.

Paxton-Buckley-Loda 48, CPCI 45. Kasey Sanders scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to power the visiting Panthers. Ally Edwards scored a team-high 13 points for PBL, which also got solid performances from Taylor Rubarts (11 points, six assists) and Amanda Ypya (10 points).

At Iroquois West Holiday Hoops Tournament

Gardner South-Wilmington 61, Iroquois West 37. Riley Schroeder led the Raiders with 19 points in a losing effort.

Manteno 50, Hoopeston 33. Lacey Simpson and Maggie Bartley eached scored 11 to lead the Cornjerkers.

Clifton Central 56, Milford 50. Ashlen Portwood scored a team-high 15 points for the Bearcats. Shelby Sumner added 12 points and Jessica Cann chipped in with 11.

In boys' basketball:

Urbana University 74, Villa Grove 45. Warren Skoza had a double-double (17 points, 14 rebounds) to power the host Illineks. Dan Lilly scored a game-high 20 points for Uni, which also got 14 points and nine rebounds from Will Fernandez. Jon Bretz's 16 points led Villa Grove.
