Central swimmers dominate rival
CHAMPAIGN – Blake Lehmann and Tanner Heinen each won two individual events and were a part of two winning relays for Champaign Central in the Maroons' 117-69 win against Centennial in a boys' swimming dual Wednesday at Charger Pool.
Lehmann won the 100-yard butterfly, 100 backstroke and was a part of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.
"There aren't too many in the conference who can compete with him in (the 100 backstroke)," Central coach Matt Hopkins said.
Heinen, who was part of winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays and also won the 50 and 100 freestyles.
In addition to being a part of the 200 freestyle relay, Stewart, who Hopkins said has developed asthma, won the 200 individual medely and the 500 freestyle.
"He's struggling with the long-distance events but he swam faster than our goal times for him," Hopkins said.
At Bloomington. Karl Heine (100 breaststroke) and Austin Zarbuck (100 butterfly) each won an individual event and were part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team for Urbana in a dual loss to Bloomington. Matt Hoffman won in diving for the Tigers.
At Lincoln. Champaign Central picked up wins against Washington and Lincoln thanks to the efforts of 103-pounder Alex Manard, who won both his matches by pinfall.
In girls' basketball:
Meridian 56, Cerro Gordo 38. Kayla West scored a team-high 14 points for the Broncos in a losing effort at the Macon County Tournament.
