URBANA – The names are ones of multi-sport Urbana High athletes from nearly a quarter of a century ago: Kirk Mammen, Mark Mammen and Dave Williams.
The individuals are ones, however, who are still prominent in the sporting community.
They might be more recognizable by their stage names as SuperDome, Tanglefoot Jones and Six-burgh.
ARMSTRONG – Bob Bezely started teaching and coaching in the Armstrong school district in 1957. More than a half-century later, he remains active with the district as a bus driver. His lengthy tenure means one thing: He has seen hundreds and hundreds of athletes.
DANVILLE — Football players on the state’s top-ranked class 6A football team are preparing for a Friday game just like they’ve done the past three weeks.
FITHIAN – Casey Fletcher tossed a five-hitter and struck out 12 to lead Oakwood's 2-1 victory against Bismarck-Henning on Monday in prep baseball.
The Comets (17-9) scored twice in the sixth to take the lead. Trace McClintock and Jimmy Rutledge had RBI singles.
Fletcher (8-1) did not walk a batter.
DECATUR – Champaign Central swept Decatur Eisenhower in a Big 12 softball doubleheader Saturday.
Maeve Aquino picked up her first win of the season as the Maroons (3-17) won the first game 10-8. Aubrie Luesse had three RBI and Monica Rondon went 3 for 4 as Central beat the Panthers (5-15) in the second game 8-2.
URBANA – Terrisa Nevin and Elizabeth Langley scored first-half goals to lead Mahomet-Seymour past Urbana Uni High 2-0 on Tuesday in girls' prep soccer.
Nevin scored on an assist by Amanda Wallace, and Langley's goal came on an assist by Kelsie Donley.
HERSCHER – Dagny Olson and Grace Ayodele had two goals apiece as Centennial defeated Herscher 6-1 Monday in girls' prep soccer.
The Chargers (11-2) also got goals from Tori Rogers and Katelynn Martinez. Keeper Micaela McLennand made five saves.
