HOOPESTON AREA SOFTBALL
The Cornjerkers are off to a 4-1 start, and a few of those wins were head-turners. Included in that group was a sweep of Champaign Central and a shutout of Salt Fork. The Cornjerkers completed their week with that 7-0 victory against the Storm, getting three hits from Amy Austin. Ariel Hardcastle also picked up three hits in the victory.
The Sages drilled Judah Christian 16-8 last week to move their record to 6-1, showing they're intent on being contenders in the Okaw Valley Conference race. Monticello's offense also shined in a 12-2 win against South Piatt (Kevin Feeney had two hits). Only a 5-4 loss to Cerro Gordo has blemished the Sages' hot start to the season.
NOTRE DAME de La SALETTE RUGBY
The Lions improved to 3-0 with their third shutout, taking out Columbus (Ind.) 41-0 on Saturday. The balanced offense had seven players score five points apiece. The tiny school from Olivet has been making strong impressions in one year, reaching the Indiana state tournament's state semifinals last spring. Don't be surprised if this year's team matches last year's success.
ST. JOSEPH-OGDEN BOYS' TRACK AND FIELD
The Spartans showed off their abilities by capturing a six-team meet at Clinton. Will Lindsey was the Spartans' lone double winner, taking the 100- and 200-meter dashes (the runner-up was 1 1/2 seconds back in the 200). Caleb Ball, Cord Shaffer, Nick Rogiers and Pat Ford also picked up wins as St. Joseph-Ogden cruised.
