The Sabers' ascension to the top spot in the Class 1A state finals was no surprise. The program had placed third and sixth the previous two seasons. This fall, with four individuals finishing among the top 30 (counting ties), coach Tim Murphy's team captured the first state crown in any sport at the school.
CENTENNIAL GIRLS' TENNIS
The Chargers captured the sectional title Saturday despite not having a singles player finish among the top four. Centennial relied on its doubles teams, sending two duos to this week's state meet near Chicago. MaryKate Krouse and Shelby Mammano finished second after dropping a three-set match in the final, and Megan Mast and Maria Mears took third.
The Hilltoppers rather quietly have enjoyed a solid season, adding a regional title after a 3-2 conquest of Judah Christian. Schlarman got goals from Brock Drews, Michael Bateman and Scott Showers to advance to today's Class 1A sectional matchup against Monticello. It's another sign of how strong the area's soccer teams have become.

A strong second-day showing propelled the Sabers to a runner-up finish in the Class 1A state meet. Fifth after the first day, the Sabers moved up to place second for the second year in a row. Katie Jean's runner-up finish was the highlight, but the Sabers also received solid rounds Saturday from Megan Deedrich, Alexis Freund and Claire Dabrowski.
