CENTENNIAL BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD
The Chargers had stellar performances from two athletes. In his indoor opener, Luke Vaughn broke the school record in the shot put (57-111/4), placing him among the top 15 all-time in the area. Teammate Jonah Peoples was the 60-meter hurdles winner at the UI Armory.
The defending Class 1A dual-meet state champions (17-1) returned to the Elite Eight after handing Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher a 45-18 loss in the sectional finals. Coach Doug DeWald’s team faces top-rated Dakota in Saturday’s 11 a.m. quarterfinal match at Bloomington.
CHAMPAIGN CENTRAL BOYS’ SWIMMING
The Maroons’ sixth consecutive sectional crown was based on finishing first or second in seven of 12 events in the 17-school field. Central had third-place performances in four other events. Two Central relays were victorious and claimed berths at state.
MAHOMET-SEYMOUR BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Bulldogs (11-14) are positioning themselves for a strong postseason bid. The team (below) has won five games in a row. The first four were against teams they’d lost to previously. Connor Diedrich and Sam Hohlfelder have scored in double figures in all five wins.
ST. THOMAS MORE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The top-ranked Sabers (31-2) earned their first state semifinal appearance. Freshman Tori McCoy’s record-breaking rookie year included breaking the single-season mark for offensive rebounds, which she did with four in the super-sectional. She has 122 to date.
