SHELBYVILLE – Kyle Dooley capped a five-touchdown outburst with a 35-yard interception return in the third quarter, leading Monticello to a 42-12 Okaw Valley Conference victory against Shelbyville on Friday.
Dooley rushed for 141 yards on 18 carries and scored on runs of 10, 59, 8 and 15 yards.
Afterward, Dooley already was looking ahead to next week's visit by Decatur St. Teresa for a game with major playoff implications for the Sages (5-3, 3-1).
"Our line came out and pretty much dominated," Dooley said. "We played real well. Hopefully, we can carry the momentum over next week because St. T is going to be a big game."
Nick Bailey contributed 62 ground yards for Monticello and scored on a 15-yard pass from Ben Palla.
Palla was 9-of-12 passing for 125 yards. Bailey finished with four catches for 66 yards.
"That's probably the best game we've played this year," said coach John Beccue, whose Sages improved to 3-1 in the conference. "We played a complete game. Defensively, we played well, and offensively we moved the ball up and down the field.
"I was really pleased with the effort they gave. I feel like we beat a pretty good football team."
The Sages were led on defense by Rennick Hoss (11 tackles), Bailey (nine tackles and an interception) and Morgan McHale (eight tackles).
