Panthers showing no quit

PAXTON – Paxton-Buckley-Loda is not a powerhouse, but it is a team that's improving.

At least on one side of the ball.

The Panthers lost to Fieldcrest 62-30 on Friday night, despite 134 rushing yards and a 68-yard touchdown run from Tyler Dunahee.

Ricky Tester added 17 rushes for 117 yards, including a 44-yard scoring run, and quarterback Kendall Cox threw two touchdowns to Austin Wood.

Coach Greg Wood was more than pleased with the effort and results from the team's offense, while acknowledging the talent of the Knights' offense.

Wood said he changed up his offensive sets in order to "open things up" a bit more.

"The kids bought into it," Wood said. "We put points on the board, had a couple of 100-yard rushers, had 85 yards with Kendall and Austin.

"We're improving on that side of the ball."

The Panthers' defense, meanwhile, was at the mercy of Fieldcrest, which scored on nine of its first 10 possessions.

"They're pretty good," Wood said. "They've got a scholarship receiver, and they were good enough to do both (pass and run)."

Fieldcrest got things started early, scoring two touchdowns in five plays.

PBL would answer back, though.

Tight end Wood caught a long pass from Cox and took it home for a 70-yard touchdown.

That was a long play for a guy used to banging it out in the trenches.

"I wouldn't say (I've got) speed," Wood said. "You've got to give a little push off every once in a while, it's fair play. I knew Kendall could put the ball out there, and I just caught it.

"I kind of surprised myself, I've never caught a long pass like that before."

Plays such as that defined much of the Panthers' offense, which had scored three touchdowns all season before this homecoming matchup.

PBL also had runs of 32 and 22 yards from the senior Tester and a 61-yard kickoff return by Dylan Bergman, which led to a touchdown.

"We've got to work," Wood said. "We can put points on the board; it's all about playing hard. But if we don't play hard, then I don't know."
