Teams of the Week: Cornjerkers soccer leads way

HOOPESTON AREA/BISMARCK-HENNING BOYS' SOCCER

The Cornjerkers wrapped up their fifth Vermilion Valley Conference title in six years, topping Salt Fork and Oakwood in their final two league matches to finish 7-1 in the conference. Seth Talbott scored goals in both matches. Brennan Crose had two goals against the Storm, and Elijah Yates scored twice against the Comets.

CENTENNIAL BOYS' GOLF

The Chargers nearly won a regional crown — losing a tiebreaker to St. Thomas More — but left no doubts about their superiority at sectionals, winning by 4 shots. Regional champ Grey Schultz was one of four Chargers to shoot in the 70s at regional. At sectional, medalist Peter Black sparked the team's triumph.

BISMARCK-HENNING BOYS' GOLF

The Blue Devils followed up on their regional crown by capturing the sectional title at Tuscola, qualifying for this weekend's state tournament in Bloomington. Sectional medalist Andy Bott led the Blue Devils to a 7-stroke win in the 12-school sectional. Tyler Moews had the top score at regionals, placing second.

GIBSON CITY-MELVIN-SIBLEY FOOTBALL

The Falcons scored on the opening kickoff, thanks to Jordyn Schultz's 86-yard return, and never trailed while upsetting ninth-ranked Flanagan-Cornell. The win made GCMS (5-2) playoff eligible. Schultz rushed for 131 yards and teammate Trevor Smith gained 100 as GCMS had all but 16 of its 336 yards' total offense on the ground.
