Arcola pleased with poll: Unity second in its class

ARCOLA — Gerald Temples knows preseason polls don't mean much.

But the third-year Arcola coach couldn't help but feel a sense of pride when he learned his team was ranked seventh in The Associated Press' initial Class 1A poll.

"We're happy with the fact that people think that much of our program and what the kids have done the past couple of years," Temples said.

Arcola will find out early where it stands Friday at home against a Salt Fork team that received votes in the poll.

"We need to go out Friday night, we're playing a good football team and we need to bring our 'A' game to have a chance to win the ballgame," said Temples, whose team went 8-4 and reached the Class 1A quarterfinals in 2011. "This team hasn't proven anything yet, and Friday is a chance to see if we can uphold that ranking."

Unity checked in at No. 2 in Class 3A in the polls, released Tuesday. Aurora Christian, the reigning state champ that defeated the Rockets in the semifinals last year, tops the 3A poll. St. Joseph-Ogden is No. 10.

Monticello opens the season ranked 10th in Class 4A, and Danville is tied for 10th in 6A.

Tuscola, which has reached three consecutive 1A title games, received votes in the 2A poll along with Bismarck-Henning, Cerro Gordo/DeLand-Weldon/Bement and Watseka. Milford/Cissna Park received votes in 1A.
