Teams of the Week: STM boys' golf in spotlight
ST. THOMAS MORE BOYS’ GOLF
The Sabers had the top freshman (Tyler Vodacek), the top sophomore (Chris Tate) and the top senior (Paul Burton), which helped the team capture first place in the Sangamon Valley Conference tourney by 29 strokes. Tate (77) won medalist honors by 2 strokes. The team’s other scoring member was junior Jesse Dankle, though another squad member, freshman Michael Kehl, secured a top-10 finish at Shewami Country Club.
A program that had won as many as five games once in the past nine years reached the five-win mark in Game 6 thanks to a 41-28 triumph against a Normal West team that was undefeated and ranked sixth in Class 6A. Cameron Mammen accounted for five of the team’s six TDs with his arm or legs. Tanner Russell, who hauled in five receptions, scored the other TD on a 59-yard interception return at McKinley Field.
BLUE RIDGE SOCCER
The Knights went 4-0, winning three matches by shutout. Ian Riggs had six assists last week for Blue Ridge (17-2-1). Dylan Grammer had two goals against Heyworth, and Jon Jones had two goals against Mount Pulaski. Mark Plunk had goals in two different matches. Overall, in the four matches, the Knights outscored their opposition 21-1. Just three of 20 foes this year have scored more than one goal.
SALT FORK VOLLEYBALL
The Storm put together its second consecutive 2-0 week, and a team that started 1-5 improved to 8-10 by week’s end. Kalyn Learnard was the defensive catalyst for coach Brent Bowman’s team. Jenna Bryant excelled setting up the hitters, including Britton Seaman and Emilie McFadden. The wins against Milford and Hoopeston Area were two-set sweeps. In conference play, Salt Fork is 5-2.
CERRO GORDO/D-W/BEMENT FOOTBALL
The Broncos’ quest for their first 9-0 regular season in 40 years took a huge step forward as the team overcame a 14-7 second-half deficit to hand Villa Grove its first loss, 21-14. Halfback Steve Isbell hooked up with QB Cole Blickensderfer for a 94-yard scoring play, and Isbell, who rushed for 184 yards, scored the winning TD on a 3-yard run with 62 seconds remaining. He also intercepted a late pass.
