A day later, Urbana wins

URBANA — Alex Beckman completed 17 of 30 passes for 371 yards and six touchdowns as Urbana beat Springfield Lanphier 50-0 on Saturday. The game was scheduled to be played Friday in Springfield but moved when officials did not show up.

Tanner Russell had 128 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

SPRINGFIELD — Urbana’s nonconference football game Friday night against Springfield Lanphier was postponed when the officials failed to show up.

The contest was rescheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Urbana's McKinley Field.

The decision to shift the location was based on the fact that the schools’ sophomore teams were scheduled to play Saturday morning in Urbana. Since  officials already are lined up for that game, it allowed the varsity squads to reschedule their contest on the Tigers' field.

Urbana coach Nathan Watson said he was informed by Lanphier’s athletic director as his team was warming up on the field that there were no officials on hand for the game.

“At first I thought they were running behind,” Watson said. “But he said, ‘No, we don’t have any officials.’ ”

Watson was told the crew ended up going to Collinsville. Officials for the game were assigned by the Central State Eight Conference, of which Lanphier is a member.

Watson said Lanphier representatives tried to line up replacement officials but could find only two on short notice.

“We just decided it wasn’t safe to play a varsity game with two guys,” Watson said. “I feel bad for the Springfield coach. I’d hate to be in his shoes. I don’t know that it was anyone’s fault. It’s just something that happened.”

From Urbana’s perspective, the confusion ended up turning a road game into a home game.

“I’m excited to play on the turf,” said Watson, referring to the Tigers’ artificial surface.

To not have the A.D. not confirm a few days or even the day of with the officals is very bad.

This can be done with the click of an email. My guess is that he will not take for granted he has officals ever again. The extra cost to families, the visiting school and volunteers in time and money really shows how bad this was by he administration of  the home school.
