MAHOMET — Mahomet-Seymour struck early and often to post a convincing 59-35 Corn Belt Conference win against Bloomington Central Catholic.
Next up: a trip to unbeaten and state-ranked Normal U-High with the Corn Belt title up for grabs.
Ranked fourth in Class 4A, the unbeaten Bulldogs tipped their hand when Tyler Francisco took the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. The rout was on.
M-S quarterback Joe Kenney, who finished 20 of 34 for 363 yards and four touchdowns, took full advantage of a BCC defense that was poised to stop the run.
“They were pretty bunched up in the box most of the night, so we just took what we could get,” M-S coach Keith Pogue said. “We’ve got a bunch of kids who can get open and catch the ball, so we just stuck with it.”
M-S raced to a 46-28 halftime lead before both offenses shifted into a lower gear in the second half.
“If you would have told me our defense would have given up 35 points to BCC and we still won the game, I wouldn’t have believed you,” Pogue said. “Quite a few points happened so fast, and then everything seemed to go into slow motion. One of the most interesting games I’ve ever been involved with.”
Francisco rushed for 61 yards on 10 carries, including an 18-yard TD run. He also made two interceptions.
